Wednesday brought with it good news all round on the injury front for the Amakhosi as defenders Fabian McCarthy, who was suffering from a hamstring injury and Patrick Mayo returned to full training.

McCarthy had been out of action for the past two weeks and missed Chiefs nail biting ABSA Cup semi final victory over Mamelodi Sundowns a fortnight ago. Mayo, who was the man of the match in the Sundowns game had injured a toe and was given time off this past week to recuperate and recover.

Midfielder Gert Schalkwyk who was felled in training last week and as a result was taken to hospital has made a significant recovery. Amakhosi’s Physiotherapist David Milner explains.

“Gert had a lot of swelling around his ankle but all of that has disappeared and he has free movement of his ankle”, Schalkwyk’s return to full health is welcome news for Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp ahead of next week’s ABSA Cup Final. The young midfield workhorse is expected back in full training on Monday and according to the Chiefs medical staff - he should be fully fit for the eagerly awaited ABSA Cup Final against Pirates.

In other injury news defender Nhlanhla Khubeka was given off on Wednesday as he is suffering from a bout of flu. Kaizer Motaung Junior continues to battle with an Achilles heel problem. This set back has seen Kaizer Junior sit out the last three weeks, as he has been unable to participate in training sessions or matches.

Finally Serge Djiehoua who hobbled off the training ground on Monday afternoon after falling down a flight of stairs at home, took a knock to his previously injured right knee. After going for X-Rays, Serge was given the all clear and will return to full activity on Thursday morning. The Ivorian has been given off to do some strength training exercises in the gym on Wednesday afternoon.
