The objective of this trip was to take part in the handing over of the new Huhudi Stadium to the community.
The preparation for the trip was of very high standard with lunch being served at the Village for all the players and officials as well as drinks and snacks to be consumed during the trip.
The trip took us about four and half hours during which time I was constantly in contact with the organisers in Vryburg by phone.
We were overwhelmed by the welcome that we received in Vryburg. We were met by a motorcade outside the town and directed to the City Hall where we met the Mayor Dr Ruth Mompati. We then moved in a motorcade around Huhudi Township and also to Coltridge Township.
The people in Huhudi were so happy to see us arrive to a point where most youngsters between the age of 8 and 12 followed the bus for about 4 kilometres chanting “Jbu, Jabu”.
The players were treated to a braai and music on Thursday night.
On Friday morning we had breakfast at a City Hotel and then visited some of the community projects in Huhudi.
The first was an Adult Disability Centre, which was followed by another one to a Children Disability Centre. We were deeply touched by the plight at this centre to a point that we put our hands together and raised an amount of about R400.00 for the Centre. The final trip was to an abandoned children and street kids centre.
Lunch was served at a community hall in Coldrige.
The game was played at night and the main reason was that the municipality wanted to use the floodlights on the first day of the handing over.
The game was very exciting with Jabu Pule, David Radebe, Nhlanhla Mathebula and Thabiso Malatsi on the line-up. I think it was a fitting return for Jabu to the game as he played above himself to satisfy about 15000 people who had come to the stadium calling for his name even long after the game had ended. We won 5-0 with three goals coming from Radebe, one from Pule and the other from Lucky Mzizi.
The game was also an eye opener to expose some of the players in the Academy team who fitted well with the senior team players and played well too.
The atmosphere at the stadium and the spirit among the players was something that will last for a long time especially at a small town like Vryburg.
The organisers of this trip from Kaizer Chiefs and Naledi municipality deserve a hand of applause for an event this big, which had no hitches.
