Now into his third month with The Amakhosi, Jonathan Quartey has truly made his mark at the centre of defense for Chiefs, as he played in five matches for the club already since transferring to Chiefs in late July.

In the five games in which he played has included four league games and one Telkom Cup match.

Quartey has been impressive in his five outings for The Amakhosi this season, as he and another Chiefs new boy Moketi Tsotetsi have combined well at the centre of defense and have alleviated one of Coach Muhsin Ertugral’s pre – season headaches.

Kaizerchiefs.com sat Jonathan Quartey down and fired a few salvos at him; in his typically calm and cool manner the Ghana youth international was able to easily tackle our questions.

KC.COM: Jonathan now that you have been able to settle down somewhat into the pattern of things at Chiefs, are you fitting into life at Naturena?

JQ: I think that I never had a problem fitting in here from the day that I arrived in July I was made to feel welcome, ever body went out of their way for me and tried their utmost to make me feel right at home. The only things that took getting used to was a different country a new culture and perhaps getting used to the new environment, I have now gotten used to life in Johannesburg and South Africa in general and I am enjoying it very much.

KC.COM: How are things going for you on the field of play, are you enjoying playing in the PSL as well as the role given to you by the coach?

JQ: I find the PSL to be a lot more physical than it is made out to be, you don’t usually associate Southern African players with being aggressive in their style of play. To me it has been very different and I am thoroughly enjoying being part of this Chiefs team, the team is playing a very exciting brand of football and the coach is playing me in my favored position as a central defender. Things really could not be any better for me on a personal perhaps as a team some of the results have not gone our way, I feel that we have turned the corner on that lean patch.

KC.COM: You recently picked up an injury in the Telkom Knock Out Cup game against Moroka Swallows, the scans revealed nothing to be concerned about. That must have pleased you?

JQ: Very much so the last thing any player would want after just establishing himself at a new club is a long and lengthy lay off through injury, it was a relief for me that there was no long term damage done to my hip and that all the doctor ordered was for me to have a couple days off to rest.

KC.COM: You picked up the injury at a stage in the game when the team had already made all of their allocated substitutions and you could not leave the field. What did the coach tell you when you informed him that you were in a lot of pain and could not move around as easily?

JQ: He was obviously concerned about my condition and then we needed to come up with a plan because I did not want to become a liability for the team, as it would have been a major burden on the guys to have played with ten men through extra time. So it was suggested that we move David Obua into a defensive role and I go up in attack, and as it worked out I was not completely out of it up front and even played a part in our second goal, which was really great.

KC.COM: How do you spend your free time?

JQ: The club have given me a very comfortable place to stay and Ditheko Mototo lives very close to me, the two of us spend most of our free time together. He is also from out of town so he does not have his family in Johannesburg and together we go shopping and just generally chill together, hanging out with him has helped me to familiarize myself with the city, as he has really been kind enough to show me around town.
