Kaizer Chiefs star Jabu Pule appeared briefly in the Protea Magistrate Court on Wednesday and was released on R4000 bail following charges of an alleged abduction of a 16-year-old girl.

A warrant of arrest was issued for the former national under-23 midfielder after the mother of a 16-year-old girl alleged her daughter was abducted by the star.

"Jabu handed himself over this morning (Wednesday) and appeared briefly in court where he applied for bail," said club's PRO Putco Mafani. "He will now appear in court on February 7."

According to police superintendent Richard Luvhengo, the warrant was issued on Tuesday.

The investigation relates to an incident on December 22 last year when Tshegofatso Mokopi went partying with the soccer star and failed to return home.

Her mother, Cynthia Mokopi, laid a charge of abduction over the weekend.

She was located by police at a house in Klipspruit, and was returned home on Monday.

Tshegofatso told the police that she had gone with Pule willingly and that the midfielder was her boyfriend.

Luvhengo said the police were taking the investigation seriously because it involved an underage girl.
