The Premier Soccer League on Thursday afternoon concluded a R400 million deal with Nedbank which sees the bank famous for its sponsorship of the Nedbank Golf Challenge. The bank will be investing R80 million a season in the country's largest domestic cup competition.

The money will be a further boost for the sport in the country.

Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motuang was heavily involved in the negotiations and putting together the deal, and was thanked by PSL Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza on Thursday for his part in another milestone sponsorship for the PSL.

Banking Heritage

The sponsorship from Nedbank has kept up a tradition of banks sponsoring this particular trophy since the inception of the PSL in 1996.

First National Bank were the initial sponsors and they aptly named the trophy the ‘BOB Save Super Bowl’. ABSA another bank took over in 2003 and the event became known as the ABSA Cup which The Amakhosi won in the 2005 – 2006 season.

Nedbank has now completed a hat trick of banks sponsoring the event, and according to a spokesperson for the bank Mrs. Pinky Moholi the Nedbank Cup will be occupy just as significant a place in South African sports fans hearts as some of the other events that they sponsor. As she added “we constantly knocked on the PSL door and today we were let in, starting next year the Nedbank Cup will become a highlight on the South African sporting calendar. Reaching the status achieved by the Nedbank Soweto Marathon and the upcoming Nedbank Golf Challenge”.

Top league

For Dr. Irvin Khoza the chairman of the PSL, signing Thursday’s lucrative sponsorship deal with Nedbank meant a lot to him as the chairman of the league. Within the space of a couple of months, the PSL has secured three major sponsorship deals, firstly for television rights with broadcaster SuperSport, in what was a historic R1.2 billion deal. That was followed by ABSA taking over a the main title sponsor of the PSL in a R500 million 5-year arrangement with the league, and Thursday’s R400 million Nedbank Cup sponsorship means that the league has raked in over two billion rand in sponsorship income in recent times.

The cash currently coming the way of the league will go a long way towards helping the PSL realize its vision of landing up amongst the top ten leagues in the world.

The beginning

With the sponsor in the bag for the PSL’S premier cup competition it waits to be seen what the winning team will pocket in the way of prize mone. Dr Khoza said that prior to the start of the preliminary rounds of the competition which will begin on the 25th January, an announcement will be made of exactly how much the victors will pocket. The final of the inaugural Nedbank Cup has been pencilled in for the final day of May next year.
