Weekend newspapers reported that finance minister Trevor Manuel had written a letter to the CEO of ABSA regarding the commissions allegedly paid to bribe individuals who had concluded the deal, on Tuesday at the leagues offices PSL chairman DR. Irvin Khoza laid to rest a number of the rumours surrounding the issues raised by Manuel in his letter which was published in a number of the Sunday newspapers.
All clear
Motaung expressed his happiness with the fact that the executive committee have done nothing wrong. As he said “at the briefing we played a clip of a meeting held in November 2006 where it was discussed that commissions would be paid to those bringing business into the PSL. As it stands the frame work of such needs to still be agreed upon by the PSL Board of Governors and with regards to the ABSA deal I think that Dr. Khoza has gone to great lengths to prove that none of the parties negotiating the deal were paid any money”.
Preserve Sanity
It was not just football journalist who turned up at the league's offices with political and social correspondents of a number of newspapers and television stations were represented as well, and Dr. Khoza asked for the media to take it easy so that the PSL executive committee could preserve their sanity.
The Chairman of the PSL in reference to the letter sent by the Minister of Finance to the ABSA CEO said, “I will not be drawn into making defamatory statements against a minister who comes from a party who liberated me, I have respect for him but I am disappointed that he did not get hold of me first before assumptions were made”.
With regards to the much talked about commissions being made over to those who negotiated the deals, the PSL Chairman said “as it stands no one has received any monies for these deals, the issue of commissions is still under review and if the board of governors decides against it then I will abide by their decision”.
