Nevertheless Chiefs will be doing themselves a disservice if they take Pillars, who are second on the Mvela Golden League standings, lightly. Pillars hail from Polokwane in the Limpopo Province and could well be a Premier Soccer League team by the end of April.
According to midfielder Derrick Spencer Pillars will not need special motivation when they come up against Chiefs as he believes smaller teams play at the best of their abilities against the Soweto giant.
“We should not look at who we are playing but instead think about the end result which is to win the game. Teams from the first division play hard and don’t hold back with tackles so it won’t be an easy game. I do feel we have the quality and hunger to make it to the next round,” Spencer said.
The Phefeni Glamour boys play Mvela teams once a week to keep match fit and Spencer believes this will benefit the Castle Premiership defending champs tremendously.
“On a weekly basis we play friendly games against various 1st Division teams and the knowledge and experience from these games will keep us well up to speed for Pillars”.
Former Chiefs player Lucky Maselesele is on the books of Pillars and his close friend midfielder Gerald Sibeko is wary of his former team-mate. “Lucky will obviously want to teach us a lesson or two so he will put in a lot of effort against us; I am looking forward to taking him on and stopping him from getting on to the score sheet”.
In their quest for promotion to the Premiership Pillars have signed a number of former PSL players like Maselesele and former Bafana Bafana player McDonald Mukansi.
Mukansi is an experienced campaigner having played in Europe and will be hoping to use his vast experience to win the game for Pillars. It won’t be easy for the Polokwane outfit as Chiefs have their sights set on winning the title for the first time and after rolling out the defending champions in the first round confidence at the Naturena training ground is high.
