Obua, Schalkwyk unavailable as Chiefs prepare for Ajax

Sunday morning in Kimberly brought with it cooler than expected weather for Chiefs as they readied themselves to face Ajax Cape Town in their fourth PSL game of the season, at the ABSA Stadium in the diamond city on Sunday afternoon.

Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp goes into today’s game minus two key personnel in the form of David Obua and Gert Schalkwyk, the former missing through a slight hamstring strain. Schalkwyk did not make the trip to Kimberly as he had a bout of flu and the Chiefs medical team asked for him to stay at home as precautionary measure.

Apart from those two absentees the Chiefs coach has a full team to choose from and has made a number changes to the team that drew in mid week with Jomo Cosmos, Derrick Spencer who replaced Cyril Nzama mid way through the first half in that game starts on Sunday. While Nzama begins Sunday’s match from the bench Ditheko Mototo gets his first start of the new campaign.

After missing the opening three games of the new season through a combination of a hamstring injury and a suspension he was serving which carried over from last season, Mototo will be looking to continue where left off last season when Chiefs met Ajax. As it was in this fixture in December 2005 when he put in a sterling display against the Urban Warriors and was able to net his first goal for Chiefs when the teams played out a hard fought 2-2 draw at Newlands.

The midfield duo of Thabo Mooki and David Mathebula have also been resigned to the substitutes bench as Ernst Middendorp takes a fresh approach to the match by recalling Tinashe Nengomasha to the starting eleven. The Zimbabwean international played the full ninety minutes when Chiefs drew 0 – 0 with Benoni Premier United in Germiston, but did not feature in the game against Cosmos.

Chiefs man of the moment on Wednesday evening Kaizer Motaung Junior who scored a cracking late goal to give Chiefs a share of the spoils against Ezenkosi has been rewarded with a starting berth against Ajax. The Amakhosi’s Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez has been tasked with the duties of captain on Sunday, Fernandez previous foray as Chiefs captain came in the pre season Limpopo tournament in July.
