Mfundo Vilakazi is a young man whose stock is rising fast in football circles after showcasing his abundant talent at the recently concluded FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, where he produced man-of-the-match performances for Amajita.
www.kaizerciefs.com caught up with the teenage starlet as he prepares alongside his Chiefs teammates for Wednesday evening’s Betway Premiership clash against Siwelele at FNB stadium.
“Things are going well for me, personally. I’m feeling good and working hard to improve each and every training session,” the in-form attacker reveals, adding, “I also think playing at the World Cup has given me added confidence.”
Since returning from Chile, ‘Obrigado’, as he is affectionately known, played his part in last weekend’s goalless draw in the first-leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round against AS Simba, coming off the bench in the second half.
”It was a tough match. We are not used to playing on that (artificial) turf but we had to manage,” he says of the match in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, “We created so many chances but didn’t convert. It was not the perfect result for us but we have the home leg to come and we must make sure we make our opportunities count this time.”
Before that, however, Amakhosi have a domestic league fixture to negotiate in order to maintain a high position in the standings and Vilakazi, who will celebrate his 20th birthday next month, shows maturity beyond his tender years in recognising what it takes to play in a big team competing on multiple fronts.
“We are involved in a few competitions so we need everybody. Each player knows he will get his chance and there is a lot of unity within the squad. We all support each other no matter who is playing or not in any given match,” he explains, before turning to the matter at hand, “ Tomorrow’s game is very important because a win will give us the boost to go into Sunday’s game with confidence. Therefore, we are only focused on Siwelele right now and then we will look to Sunday. We have trained well and we’re looking forward to the match.”
The Betway Premiership encounter between Kaizer Chiefs and Siwelele takes place on Wednesday at FNB stadium, kicking off at 19:30.
Tickets, at R60, are available online at www.opentickets.co.za and www.kaizerchiefs.com, or in-store at Shoprite, Checkers, and Usave supermarkets.
