The MTN8 final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs at the Absa Stadium has been postponed. The match was meant to have been played this evening.

Continous rain in the Durban area over the last 24 hours has made the pitch at the Stadium unplayable, forcing referee, Daniel Bennett to call the match off .

“After careful consideration from the refereeing team, we had no choice but to call the match off as we had to take the safety of the players into consideration,” said Bennett.

“The pitch was inspected at 9am this morning, again at midday, and then at 3pm and there was no improvement with rain forcasted till the evening.”

“We even tried to get the super sopper from the neighbouring Kingsmead Cricket Stadium, but the outlook was extremely bleak,” added Bennett.

A MTN8 Cup Committee meeting was hastily convened at the Absa Stadium soon after Bennett’s decision and the match will now be played on Tuesday 23 September 2008.

The match will still kick-off at 20h15.

“The weather is never in our control, but on behalf of the PSL I would like to apologise to all the fans and the clubs that have been preparing for this big final,” said PSL CEO, Kjetil Siem.

“At the same time we all support the referee’s decision and the Cup Committee together with the clubs moved the final as quick as possible so all stakeholders can plan accordingly, Siem concluded.

Fans must keep their original tickets as they will be valid for Tuesday’s match.
