The Amakhosi were out looking for only their second victory over European opposition at the FNB Stadium, since South Africa’s readmission into world sports back in 1992 once again it was a case of Chiefs of what might have been.

The Amakhosi started off brightly and had the opportunity to draw first blood against their Russian visitors FC Moscow as early as the 5th minute, but David Radebe got the ball caught between his feet and was unable to convert his chance from close range.

Chiefs had another great scoring opportunity four minutes later, Songwe Chalwe saw his close range header off a Ditheko Mototo corner well saved by Kozko in the FC Moscow goal.

A few moments later Amakhosi number Rowen Fernandez was into making an acrobatic save from Moscow’s Bistrov from close range.

The second half continued in the same exciting and attacking vein as the first half, FC Moscow created the first scoring opportunity of the second half. When former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Stanton Fredericks weaved his way through the Chiefs defence and unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the 18 yard area, he found Fernandez in the Chiefs goal in inspired form as the Chiefs goalie magnificently stopped his shot.

Not long after Chiefs took the lead after some neat interplay of passing between a number of players, the ball came out to Arthur Zwane on the right. His quick pass across the Moscow goal mouth was met by Gert Schalkwyk who slotted the ball between goalie and defender to give Chiefs the lead.

FC Moscow did not give in after going a goal down and levelled matters eight minutes later when substitute Gorawski was sent through on the Amakhosi goal.

With Rowen Fernandez stranded with out cover as the Chiefs defence was all at sea, Gorawski found himself in acres of space and was able to take his time as he coolly beat the onrushing Chiefs keeper and levelled proceedings.

With that the game headed into penalties in all sixteen spot kicks were taken and Chiefs narrowly missed out as Ditheko Mototo hit the post with Chiefs eighth penalty kick, the visitors than converted theirs to take the spoils.

Chiefs might have lost on the field but the Amakhosi have made many friends away from it, with this game Chiefs have opened up a footballing frontier never crossed by a South African team before.
