On Sunday Kaizer Chiefs communications manager Thebe Mohatle did less talking and a whole lot of walking, when he was part of the field of 20 000 athletes who participated in the various disciplines of the 2007 Soweto Marathon.

Mohatle was amongst the group who took part in the 21 km walk and in what his first major walk, the Chiefs communications manager who took part donning full Amakhosi regalia was a very recognizable figure in the famous gold and black strip of Chiefs.

Completed the race in just over 3 hours and finished with in the allocated time, the winner of Mohatle’s walk was Thami Hlatswayo of TUKS University who completed the race in 1:46: 02, while the over all winner of the men’s 42km race was Elijah Mutandiro of Lesotho.

Loving it

A visibly aching Thebe Mohatle was not given much time to recover from his grueling ordeal on Sunday, as he was up early on Monday morning and headed straight out to the OR Tambo International Airport to catch a plane bound for Durban. As he and his team do canvassing amongst fans ahead of The Amakhosi’s arrival for Wednesday’s PSL game against Moroka Swallows.

Talking to Kaizerchiefs.com Mohatle said, “it was my first major walk although I did do a number of such events previously in the build up to the Soweto Marathon none of those could compare to Sunday’s race.

The atmosphere was really amazing and being part of such a massive field of participants was really unbelievable and it was an experience that I could never forget”

Gold and Black passion

Mohatle kitted himself out in the famous colors of The Amakhosi when he took to the streets of Soweto on Sunday, being dressed in the clubs colors helped him win a few more admirers who cheered him on along route up to the finish line.

He picks up the story, “there were huge crowds along the way and amongst them many Chiefs fans and once they recognized the club jersey and saw it was a person representing the club it got them really excited. Having all those people along the way shouting for me and pushing me along really got me across the finish line”.

On whether or not he will do the marathon again Mohatle said, “if the fixture schedule is kind to me next season then I will most definitely be back walking Soweto flat, if possible perhaps one or two of the Kaizer Chiefs legends team could walk with me next year”.
