Middendorp welcomes reserve league

The 26th of February will signify another milestone date in the history of the Premier Soccer League as the league has pencilled in this date for the commencement of a pilot reserve league.

The new league will for 2007 allow for the eight Gauteng based PSL teams to enter teams in the league, which will be based on a round robin system of matches which will see teams playing against each other on a home and away basis.

With each team guaranteed to play a total of fourteen games the teams involved in the league will be looking to use the league, as a platform to allow fringe players to state their case for regular first team football.

Kaizer Chiefs who have long been advocates for the formation of a reserve league have welcomed, what team manager Bobby Motaung hopes will be a league with a long life span which will eventually grow into a national reserve league.

Commenting on the imminent arrival of the reserve league Motaung said on Wednesday morning “representatives from the eight teams met recently and there was a over whelming feeling amongst all the teams that a reserve league in South Africa was well over due.

Chiefs along with the other seven teams who will be participating in this pilot league are committed to ensuring its success, and will use it uplift club football in the country”.

Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp has also given the new league the thumbs up and is looking forward to benefiting from the advantages such a league proposes for his team.

The Chiefs coach said “one cannot really understand how easy such a league will make our lives, first and foremost players who are not playing regularly will now be given the opportunity to play in a competitive league which will keep them match fit.

We will also be able to help our youth team players who we have targeted for promotion to the first team, the opportunity to get to grips with the level of competition that they will be up against in the near future. The list of benefits of such a league are many if you look at the problems we have had with injuries recently, these kinds of games are perfect for fielding rehabilitating players”.

First up for the Chiefs reserve team in the new league will see them host Benoni Premier United on the 26th February, all matches in the reserve league will be played on a Monday and will kick off at 16h00.

The Chiefs reserve team who will be lead on match days by Chiefs assistant coach Frank Eulberg will play their matches at the Eldorado Park Stadium, in the suburb of Eldorado Park in Southern Johannesburg. Chiefs will conclude their reserve league fixtures with a game against Moroka Swallows on Monday 28th May in Eldorado Park, a day after the Chiefs 1st team conclude their fixtures for the 2006 – 2007 PSL season against Silver Stars.
