Mendu placed on transfer

Just two days after the Vodacom Challenge champions Kaizer Chiefs revealed six new players, midfielder Jabulani Mendu has been placed on transfer following an urgent meeting he requested with club chairman Kaizer Motaung on Wednesday, 07th July 2004.

Mendu, whose contract runs for another year with the Amakhosi, was visibly apprehensive at the press conference on Wednesday when the new youngsters - mostly midfielders - were introduced to the media.

It is reported that the player requested a meeting with Motaung and requested to be placed on transfer. The player felt strongly that he was not in coach Ted Dumitru's plan for the new season.

Speaking from his offices, Motaung said he was shocked but not surprised at the player’s attitude and demands. “Surely the boy is intimidated by the young players we have signed but I have always suspected something sinister was coming up with Jabu (Mendu) since the imminent departure of his good friend Brian (Baloyi) a few weeks ago. From day one of his arrival here, the technical staff has always recorded with regret, the player’s attitude towards his teammates and lack of respect for the coaches. The club has acceded to his request and wish him well,” said Motaung.

During the past season Mendu has clashed with the technical staff on numerous occasions for discipline-related cases, and repeated and disruptive late coming to training and camp have been the main cause of concern from the coaching staff.

The club voted Mendu’s goal against Dynamos during the Telkom Charity Spectacular last year, as the ‘Goal of the Year’ during the club’s player awards for the past season.
