“Bra Sam” as he is affectionately known at the village was a player in his own right and turned for Mzimhlophe City Blacks before joining Kaizer Chiefs in the 1970's.

Coincidentally, Sam Motaung was handed the no. 7 jersey when he arrived at the Club. The jersey is currently being used by another Motaung, Kaizer Motaung Jr.

He smiles when asked if he has anything to do with Kaizer Jr. wearing the same number he was wearing when he played briefly for Chiefs in the early 70s, “I think you should ask Kaizer why he is wearing no. 7,” he said with a smile.

Bra Sam remembered vividly how he joined the Club, “I was working somewhere after I had retired as a player. Kaizer asked myself and Ben Segale to help with the Club’s reserve side. I came out of retirement and featured briefly for the Club but grooming the next generation of players was more important to me. Players like Trevor Mthimkhulu, Wellington Manyathi, Doctor Khumalo, etc came through Chiefs reserve side,”

Speaking from his office at the Club headquarters in Naturena, “Bra Sam” has seen the Club move from operating from Kaizer’s home in Phefeni, at the garage from Gilbert Sekgabi’s house in Soweto, to Royal Arcade in Johannesburg, then Klamson House in Commissioner Street.

“We moved offices around as the Club got bigger and bigger. We then moved to the Chiefs Village in the early 90s. This is our home now,” he said proudly.

Having helped the Club groom players such as Wellington Manyathi, “Bra Sam” also assisted by being a ‘Kit Manager’ for the Club, “Unlike today when you have two kit managers for the Club, then I used to just control the kit. Kaizer’s mother in Phefeni was the one who was making sure that the kit was ready for the next game. I just used to collect it. In the late 80s I brought the current Kit Manager, Jackson Mokoena who has done a brilliant job ever since,” he revealed.

Bra Sam today among other things runs a Club shop at the former Club’s offices, Klamson House and still assists with day-to-day activities at the Village.

He describes winning the Mandela Cup as the proudest moment in 38 years with the Club, “I will never forget that day. We are the only Club in the Southern African region that has achieved that feat,”

He smiles when asked to choose his favourite player of all time, “I have seen so many players donning the black and gold jersey. (After a long pause). It has to be Lucas Radebe and also Doctor Khumalo. Lucas adopted me as his father and I am proud of his achievements. The same goes to Doctor who I watched growing up to becoming the man he is today,” he said.
