Kaizer Chiefs locks horns against Moroka Swallows this weekend in a lucrative MTN8 Cup at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria. Matches between the two sides from Soweto are stuff of legends as former Kaizer Chiefs striker Michael Bizzah Dlamini reflects in this edition of Memoirs.

A founder member for the Club, “Monkey Jive” as Bizzah was known in football circles in his hey day steered for the Glamour Boys as a deadly striker from 1970-1976. In the late 90s he returned to Naturena as an assistant coach to Muhsin Ertugral -now he stays in Durban, his hometown.

“We would never lose against Swallows,” boasted Dlamini.“Swallows were a very tough side to play against as they boasted some of the best players from Soweto. I remember one of their best players Killer Ngidi but even then we used to beat Swallows. On our side we had, the late Ace Ntsoelengoe, Pele Blaschke, Shaka Ngcobo, Johnny “Magwegwe” Mokoena...the list goes on.

Even today the current Kaizer Chiefs team stands a chance to beat Swallows when the two sides meet at Loftus on Saturday,” he said. “The game that comes to my mind first when I think of our battles with Swallows is the league game that we played with them in 1973. Chiefs were desperate for points as they were challenging for the league. I recall the late Ewert “The Lip” Nene fetching me in Maritzburg for the game at Orlando Stadium.

"It was a tough game but we ended up winning by 3-1 with me scoring one of the goals in that particular game. My former teammate and one of the founder members of the Club, Ratha Mokgoatleng recently commented on that goal which is to me one of the best I have ever scored. I was approaching Swallows poles from the left and unleashed a rocket with my left foot 20 yards out straight to the top corner. The goal put the final nail on Birds’ coffin,” he said.

“Monkey Jive” as a former striker himself said Jose Torrealba has a potential to solve Chiefs problems up front.

“He is a top class striker and I have no doubt he is going to be helpful. I do think he needs help though to offload some of the pressure from him. Chiefs should get another striker. There is also Siphelele Mthembu who can be easily become one of the best strikers in South Africa. I have watched the boy couple of times here in KZN, he is a gem. He is at a right place at Chiefs because he will be properly nurtured,” he concluded.
