For Fabian McCarthy it was particularly important for him to come up with a big performance, given the fact that Celtic were the team with whom the central defender had made his PSL debut back in the 1997-98 season. He did just that as he played with his heart on his sleeve in the centre of defence against Celtic, and did not hold back in getting in match saving tackles as he made life difficult for the Celtic attack.
With a victory over one of his former teams in the bag, McCarthy is more than confident that it can be repeated and he can complete a brace of victories over his former clubs when Chiefs host Mamelodi Sundowns in Durban on Wednesday.
Always sweet
McCarthy, who made a return to competitive action in October after sitting on the sidelines since April, has always looked forward to playing his former teams and believes that there is nothing sweeter than victory over the team whose jersey you once wore.
“When ever I face my old team I get really motivated for the occasion and I enjoy coming out of the game as the victor. Facing an old team is like a cup final for me and I desire for nothing more than putting one over them, as it was on Saturday I would like to repeat that on Wednesday and get not just satisfaction on a personal level but for the fans happiness as well.”
Sundowns tester
Having come through ninety minutes against Celtic without allowing their strikers past him, as he put up a performance which saw him narrowly lose out on the man of the match award, McCarthy knows that he will have to be on his guard once again with the visit of Sundowns on Wednesday evening.
“Sundowns are the defending champions and we saw their true quality when they fought back from a goal down over the weekend to win the game against Free State Stars. They looked menacing in the final third of the pitch against Stars and all of their front men Patrick Apataki, Lerato Chabangu and the battle-weary legs of Peter Ndlovu will take a strong collective effort to be stopped.”
