Mayo missed Chiefs first game of the new season on the 27th August, which was a 2-2 draw against SuperSport United in Tshwane (Pretoria), as he was away attending the funeral of his late mother. His return to action for the Amakhosi signalled his 50th start for Chiefs in all competitions, since beginning his career at Chiefs almost four seasons ago when he made his debut against Wits in a SAA Supa8 ¼ Final game.
In addition to his fifty starts for Chiefs Mayo has played a further 18 games as a substitute, the thirty three year old who originally joined Chiefs as a striker has recently found a new lease of life under Ernst Middendorp. Ted Dumitru converted Mayo from a striker back to his original position as a defender, at the beginning of last season he had not featured in many games.
Once he got the opportunity to start Mayo did not let go and played a pivotal role for Chiefs and was instrumental in the teams ABSA Cup success last season. As he ended off the ABSA Cup on a personal high winning the player of the tournament award which brought with it a cash purse of R40 000 richer and a brand new motor vehicle from the sponsors.
Mayo was unaware that he had passed this unique milestone and added, “it would have been nice to have marked this achievement with a victory”. Mayo who was quick to make his mark for Chiefs when he joined from SuperSport United in 2003 – 2004 as he scored on his league debut for The Amakhosi in August 2003 when they defeated by Mamelodi Sundowns by two goals to nil.
Further added that his next aim is to reach the magical 100 mark matches for Chiefs saying “I now have one more goal and that is to reach a century of matches as a Chiefs players, first I think heading for a century of games in total and thereafter a century of matches that I have started”.
Mayo will be confident of adding to his fifty starts for Chiefs on Wednesday night when The Amakhosi take on Jomo Cosmos as he aims for a century of appearances for Chiefs. He will be equally confident of displaying the same kind of form he did against Benoni United as he and his fellow defenders aim to make it a night to forget for the inform Cosmos striking duo of Anthony Laffor and Chris Katongo.
