Matsasantsa quarterfinal date for Chiefs in Knockout Cup

Monday afternoon’s Telkom Knockout Cup Quarterfinal draw held at the Wanderers club in Northern Johannesburg handed The Amakhosi the trickiest tie of the quarterfinal round, when they were drawn to face SuperSport United away from home.

With the four quarterfinal matches taking place on the 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th October, the quarterfinal between The Amakhosi and Matsasantsa will be the fifth game in four consecutive seasons which will see the teams face up to each other. At Monday’s draw, the sponsors added some mouth-watering incentives to reward players in various categories for their individual performances, amid hopes that the players will go the extra distance towards and find more goals as well as add to the entertainment value of the event.

Continue dominance

A few years ago being drawn up against SuperSport United might have caused a panic of sorts in the Chiefs camp, but The Amakhosi’s recent dominance in cup ties over United has put paid to Chiefs' concerns over United being something of a bogey team for them in cup competitions.

Stretching back to the 2004 – 2005 season, Chiefs were defeated by United in the SAA Supa8 Final, but during the same season Chiefs got one over SuperSport by beating them in the final of the same competition when it was still known as the Coca Cola Cup.

That win was followed by two more Chiefs' victories over United, the next came in the 2005 – 2006 season when Chiefs knocked the then defending champions SuperSport United out of the ABSA Cup in the opening round. The Amakhosi eventually dethroned United when they lifted the title in May 2006, Chiefs made it a hat trick of consecutive cup wins over SuperSport with a 1-0 victory in the 2006 – 2007 SAA Supa8 final with Rotson Kilambe’s goal being the difference between the teams as Chiefs won 1-0.

Cash carrot

Any player still in the Telkom Knock Out Competition would have been happy to hear Zikie Molusi of Telkom announce a number of cash bonuses up for grabs for some of the outstanding individual performances in the 2007 Telkom Knockout Cup.

Molusi, while breaking down the awards said, “As a sponsor we have had to find ways in which we can up the level of competition and ensure that we can get the best out of all teams in every game they play. So we came up with a structure whereby outstanding players - whether it be a goalkeeper, defender, midfielder or striker - will get deserved recognition for their achievements and the over all player of the tournament will pick up R200 000 for his contributions”.
