Kaizer Chiefs defender Tefu Mashamaite is keeping his emotions in check as he looks ahead to coming face to face with his former teammates from BIDVest Wits, when the Amakhosi host the Students in an Absa Premiership game at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.

“If the coach gives me the nod to feature against Wits, I will go out there and give it my best. I am with a new team now. I have played two games and I am looking to improve on my performance from the Ajax game,” said a calm and collected Mashamaite.

On the possibility of playing against his old teammates he said, “When coming up against a team that you once played for it is important to not let the emotion of the occasion get the better of you.

"Like I said if I am given the opportunity I would like to get out on the field and practically do a good job for the team.”

Mashamaite did not feature when Chiefs defeated Wits in the MTN8 quarterfinal clash at the beginning of August. He holds the view that should they display the same discipline and determination that they have in their last four matches then a positive outcome is likely.

“We do know that this is a new game and it will be different to the last one. It is important for us to play well and execute the game plan that we come up with effectively and I believe if we do that we will get a good result.”

Having been on the other side once previously in his career Mashamaite knows just what the mindset of his ex teammates will be heading into the game. “For games against the big three teams like Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns, players don’t need the coach to motivate them and they will be looking eagerly towards facing us.

"Given that this is a derby game we are also motivated and would like to do well. We will be calm, play an intelligent game and hopefully get the result we are looking for.”
