Tottenham Hotspurs legend and now an ambassador, Garry Mabbut, paid a glowing tribute to the Kaizer Chiefs side that beat Spurs on Saturday.

Garry Mabbutt, best remembered for his 16-year spell at Spurs where he won the Uefa Cup in 1984 and FA Cup in 1991 as a captain, is in the country for the Vodacom Challenge and was one of the interested spectators at Peter Mokaba Stadium as Chiefs got one over Spurs.

Mabbutt was gracious in defeat. “Congratulations to Kaizer Chiefs. They deserved to win the game. They looked solid at the back, convincing in the middle and attacked with pace. They should challenge strongly for the Premiership this season.

“It was easy to see that our boys have not regained their sharpness yet. We are pleased with the performance of the boys and we achieved what we wanted to achieve out of this game. I am sure that we will be in a better shape in our next game,” he said.

Mabbutt believes the Glamour Boys will challenge strongly for the championship this season if they continue where they left off on Saturday. “It is still early days but you can see the way they are playing that they have confidence. They gave us lot of problems when going forward.

“I do think though they need to improve on their last attacking third.

"They created quite a number of opportunities and if they convert most of the chances they create they will be have an exciting season,” added Mabbutt, who quit the game during the 1997/1998 season.
