It was a happy return in goal for Bafana Bafana for Amakhosi goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune as he managed to keep a clean sheet as South Africa ran out 1-0 victor’s over 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinalists Ghana during an international friendly game at Soccer City on Wednesday evening.

Katlego Mphela scored the game’s only goal in the 42nd minute after being set up by Steven Pienaar.

The game herald the beginning of a new era for South Africa under new coach Pitso Mosimane, the match also afforded Khune the opportunity to wipe away his World Cup nightmare when he was acrimoniously sent off on June 16 when Bafana were beaten by Uruguay in their second group game.

Siphiwe Tshabalala like Khune started the game and earned his 53rd cap for South Africa, the Chiefs winger was lively throughout the game, he produced a moment of magic early on when he managed to cleverly lob the ball over the Ghana defence and set Katlego Mphela into a clear goal scoring opportunity in the 15th minute.

It took some good improvisation from Ghanaian keeper Richard Kingson to clear the danger as he headed the ball away.

Khune kept South Africa in the game coming up with a big save on 64 minutes when he scrambled across his goal line to smother the ball off a close range effort from Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan, Khune was again called into action seven minutes from regular time saving a quickly taken Ghana free kick from the left at his near post.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane entered the game as a 72nd minute substitute for South Africa and managed to do a good holding job in midfield and frustrated the Ghanaian’s with his strong tackling.

A good start for the Chiefs players in the Bafana squad as Pitso Mosimane kicks off his tenure as Bafana Bafana coach with a win over Ghana.
