Playing Conditions: Light wind, temperature at kick off 20°c
It was a case of the teacher handing out a lesson to his former student when The Amakhosi flew over the birds on Saturday evening and into the quarter finals of the Telkom Knock Out Cup, when Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral over saw an Amakhosi victory over a Swallows team coached by his former assistant at Ajax Cape Town Ian Gorowa. Chiefs though did things the hard way as they needed extra time and a penalty shoot out to defeat their Soweto rivals. With their victory over Swallows on Saturday Chiefs extend their run to five successive cup victories over the Dube birds, running back to 1996 from the inception of the PSL.
Early Casualty
The match being a derby with the added edge of also being a cup game meant that it would be played at a furious pace and it started out that way with Chiefs having three shots at goal in the opening four minutes. It was during one of The Amakhosi’s early attacks that created the major talking point of the first half, as Siphiwe Tshabalala played Kaizer Motaung Junior in on goal with a pass that caught the Swallows defence looking like statutes. Motaung raced onto the ball but Greg Etafia in the Swallows goal slid out and under the Chiefs player who tried to avoid the Swallows keeper but the two collided, and Etafia lay on the ground motionless for a few seconds. He then began rolling and writhing in pain and was eventually substituted and replaced by former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Aubrey Mathibe. Etafia is believed the have fractured his forearm in the collision and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Own worst enemy
Like it had been in a number of games this season Chiefs for all their first half possession and dominance contrived to let a number of goal scoring opportunities slip by. In the space of two minutes just before the half hour mark both Kaizer Junior and Tinashe Nengomasha were guilty of squandering what were great goal scoring opportunities. After some good build up play from the back Gerald Sibeko was able to work the ball out wide to Siphiwe Tshabalala on the left, the speedy winger beat his marker and worked the ball across the ground to Kaizer Motaung Junior inside the Swallows six yard area, who with the simplest of touches could have had the ball in the back of the net, mis-timed his shot as he missed the ball completely. This was in the 29th minute and a minute on Tinashe Nengomasha teed up a shot on the edge of the Swallows 18 yard area, Swallows defender Bevan Fransman acted quickly and ran from behind to clear the ball in the nick of time.
Skipper to the fore
Shaun Bartlett captaining Chiefs for the second time this season must have thought it was going to be one of those nights again, when in the 38th minute he was able to climb and head a well executed Siphiwe Tshabalala free kick from the left goal wards. Mathibe though had other ideas and got up well and pushed Bartlett’s close range header over for a corner. With the lengthy delay earlier in the half due to Etafia’s injury, we were into the second minute of referees optional time at the end of the first half when Tinashe Nengomasha set Jimmy Tau loose on the right, Tau out gunned the Swallows rear guard and got the ball over to Bartlett whose initial attempt at goal was saved by Mathibe but Bartlett acted quickly and reacted quickly thereafter as he turned towards goal, and sent the loose ball past Mathibe to sent Chiefs into the lead.
Swallows add pressure
While Chiefs had the possession and the chances for most of the game the Birds decided to come out of their nest in the final quarter of the game, and went all out to find a way back into the tie. On sixty nine minutes James Chamanga ran onto a back heel and powered away from Nzama and then shot across goal, Khune though got in the way of the shot and blocked it as Sandile Ndlovu tried to push the ball over the line Tsotetsi got in his way before Jonathan Quartey spectacularly cleared the danger with an over head kick. Six minutes later and a communication error between Khune and Quartey almost let Alton Meiring in on goal, as Khune came off his line to clear the ball Quartey headed it past his own keeper towards goal. With Alton Meiring neck and neck with him Quartey ran back and stuck out a boot as Meiring headed the ball, the ball deflected off the Chiefs defender and the danger was averted.
Chiefs count the costs
With two minutes of regulation time to go, Siphiwe Tshabalala cut in to the Swallows penalty box from the left by line and found Nengomasha with a short pass, he scuffed his shot but the ball found Arthur Zwane who with ample time opted to side foot the ball home. Instead of securing the game Zwane allowed Mathibe to sprawl across the goal and block the ball with his hands, deep inside injury time at the end of the second half disaster struck for Chiefs when Bevan Fransman knocked the ball to the far post where Alton Meiring headed the ball down across to Sandile Ndlovu who toe poked the ball home on the line, to silence the Chiefs fans who were in song and dance hoping to out the finals minutes and their team through to the quarter finals. It was not to be as Ndlovu came up with an unlikely equalizer.
Extra time drama
Having made all of his substitutions in the ninety minutes Amakhosi coach Muhsin Ertugral needed to play musical chairs with his players and used defender Jonathan Quartey as a strike partner for Kaizer Motaung Junior. Quartey played a master stroke in the 100th minute when he back heeled the ball to Ditheko Mototo who in turn sent a powerful curling ball goal wards, Kaizer Motaung Junior ran towards the ball and hit it with his chest beyond Mathibe to give Chiefs the lead for the second time. Five minutes later Motaung must have thought that he had put The Amakhosi further in front when he was able to head Arthur Zwane’s cross from the right past Aubrey Mathibe - somehow the referee Jerome Damon and his far side assistant disallowed the goal for offside. On second glance it looked as though the officials got their decision-making horribly wrong, and denied Chiefs what seemed a legitimate goal.
Swallows back in
Having rode their luck in the initial exchanges in the first half of extra time Swallows found an equalizer for the second time in the game when James Chamanga beat the Chiefs offside trap, and picked up a ball that was sent over the Chiefs defence and dispatched it past Khune to level matters for a second time.
Shootout glory
Just as it was when the teams met in the semifinals of the 2004 Coca Cola Cup at the same venue, where they were deadlocked 2-2 after extra time and a shoot out was needed to separate them. It was the same on Saturday evening and Itumeleng Khune was the shootout hero for Chiefs as the young goalkeeper superbly saved James Mayinga and Sandile Ndlovu’s spot kicks and Songwe Chalwe ballooned his, while Cyril Nzama, David Obua and Siphiwe Tshabalala got things right from 12 yards out to secure a 3-1 victory in the shoot out for Chiefs.
