Khenyeza derby goal fastest for Chiefs in PSL
Khenyeza derby goal fastest for Chiefs in PSL

Many scribes had been saying that Mabhudi Khenyeza has failed to ignite at Chiefs and produce the same kind of form and goal scoring touches that he did during his time with Lamontville Golden Arrows, all it took was 19 seconds during Chiefs derby with arch rivals, historical and traditional foes Orlando Pirates to show other wise. Khenyeza showed he still has a killer instinct in front of goal, when he controlled a throw in from Shaun Bartlett held of Bongani Cashibe and with his back to the goal struck a sweeping volley which flew across goal into the back of the net to give The Amakhosi the lead on Saturday.

Khenyeza’s goal over took the record held by Siyabonga Nomvete who managed to find a goal inside the first minute of a league match against Pirates on the 14th June 2000, which was on the final day of the of the 1999 – 2000 season against Pirates.

Doing what I know

Saturday’s goal was Khenyeza’s third of the current campaign and his most spectacular one for The Amakhosi yet, it also saw him get onto level terms with Shaun Bartlett who has also managed to find three goals this season so far in the ABSA Premiership. For the shy striker who comes from Kwa-Zulu Natal and was made famous by the goals he scored while playing for Golden Arrows, the quality of the goal does not really faze him scoring goals though is more important to him.

Speaking to kaizerchiefs.com after Saturday’s game he said “ in a game chances don’t come around every minute but when they do you have to ensure that they count in your favour, it was a really quick move the throw in came to me very fast. I did not have much time to think and had to everything in one motion and when it does it feels very nice, to me the goal could have been a simple tap in something less spectacular it would not have really mattered to me but scoring does matter”.

Fast and deadly

Khenyeza’s strike was the first in two seasons by a Chiefs player inside the opening two minutes of a game, Serge Djiehoua currently on loan to Thanda Royal Zulu was the last Chiefs player to achieve such a feat. He managed to score in the final seconds of the 2nd minute of a league game between Chiefs and Cosmos played at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on the 21st September 2005, Khenyeza though tops the list with his early strike in the Soweto Derby he along with David Kannemeyer, Collins Mbesuma, Djiehoua and Siyabonga Nomvete complete the list of the five Chiefs players to have scored the quickest goals for The Amakhosi in PSL matches.
