Kaizer Chiefs go into the Christmas break as the country’s form team, as they top the table and appear well on their way to winning their title in 11 years while their rivals Sundowns are at the wrong end of the table.

The last time that Chiefs won the title was in 1992, when they swept all before them in an all-conquering season.

So far Chiefs have played 18 matches in all competitions and lost only twice. Most importantly they have conceded only five goals in that time, a fantastic record that looks set to take them all the way this season.

Chiefs go into the break a point ahead of Ajax, but have a game in hand over the Cape side who have had a fantastic turnaround this season. Exactly this time last season Ajax were rock bottom on the table and seemingly heading for relegation.

They avoided the relegation axe on the last day of the season, when they held Sundowns to a draw in Pretoria. This season the acquisition of four Congolese internationals has seen the side undergo a major transformation. Among the stars this season has been Mulelekayi Kanku who has scored four times so far this season.

As things stand now, Ajax look set to challenge Chiefs strongly for the league title. One club that really seems to be struggling is Sundowns, and the Brazilians end the year with a defeat to Hellenic, a team that had not won a match all season.

The Brazilians have not been able to get things together this season, and went into the Christmas break having picked up three out of a maximum of 15 points.

Several players have also stood out when it comes to the goalscoring stakes with two players leading the stakes. At the start of the season, nobody would have predicted that Marawaan Bantam and Kaizer Chiefs veteran John “Shoes” Moshoeu would be the country’s leading marksmen going into the Christmas break.

Bantam is in his first full season with Santos, and has so far impressed with his composure in front of goal, while Moshoeu has been a revelation in Chiefs colours in what has been a great comeback.

But while these two players are with teams at the top of the table, they are being chased by a man whose club is in the relegation zone. Zulu Royals striker Jacky Ledwaba has scored five times in a side that has only scored 14 goals so far this season, a great strike rate for any striker.

But the tall striker will have to bang in a whole lot more if his side hopes to avoid relegation at the end of the season.
