Jimmy Tau will wear the captain’s armband in the 2008/9 season starting from the Vodacom Challenge clash against Manchester United at Newlands on Saturday. Football Manager, Bobby Motaung, confirmed this to kaizerchiefs.com.

Bobby said, “We were obviously looking for a personality to lead the team to the new challenges this season and Jimmy fits the bill. He is however not the only captain but one of the three, including Tinashe Nengomashe and Arthur Zwane. Jimmy is however the carrier of the captain’s armband and then in his absence Tinashe or Arthur Zwane will wear the captain’s armband”

Jimmy Tau joins the likes of the late, Ariel “Pro” Khongoane, Johannes “Ryder” Mofokeng, Howard Freeze, Niel Tovey, Johannes “Chippa” Molatedi who have worn the captain’s armband with pride and honour in the years gone by.

“I had mixed feelings when my name was announced. I was shocked but at the same time excited when the news was broken to the team during the meeting with the Chairman last night” says the visibly delighted right back on how he reacted to the news.

“I am even now trying to digest this and I do not have a lot to say. The Chairman addressed us about the challenges ahead of this season and wished me good luck on my new responsibility. It is a great honour for me to be given a responsibility to lead such a big Club with multitudes of supporters. I see it as a blessing from God. I also want to thank coach, Muhsin Ertugral for believing in my ability as a footballer. He has been very encouraging to me,” he said.

Coincidentally, the last time Jimmy wore the captain’s armband was when he was in his last game for Orlando Pirates in the final of Vodacom Challenge. Orlando Pirates ended up victorious beating Amakhosi in the final in Durban.

“I was talking to EL Buda (his roommate) about this…I do not know if it is a coincidence or not that I will start leading the team during the Vodacom Challenge. All I know is that I am honoured to be appointed The Captain of this great Club,” he added.
