For two weeks in a row David Mathebula came in as a second half substitute to turn the tide to allow Chiefs to comprehensive victories. The first being when he entered the field at half time against Bloemfontein Celtic and helped lift Chiefs to a two nil victory. The same was true when David was brought on once again as a second half substitute with Gert Schalkwyk in an ABSA Cup Last 32 game against SuperSport United and contributed by scoring once and being instrumental in carving out another goal.

Mathebula’s phenomenal performances in the last two games have added a new entertaining dimension to Chiefs game for the supporters to enjoy and dance in the aisles. The inspiration behind his huge contribution to the team's success comes from further afield. Mathebula’s mother currently lies in bed at their family home in the Limpopo Province and it his ill mother who helps lifts his game. He explains “every time I enter the field, I think of my mother -when she sees me on television and hears news that I am doing well it really lifts her spirits.

The people around her have told me that she gets very happy if she hears news about my performances, I want to help improve my mother's fortunes in whatever way I can”.

David’s strike against SuperSport United in the ABSA cup last 32 match was his first for Chiefs since he scored a brace against Black Leopards in Thoyandou on the 22nd of December last year.

His overall contribution to the team's success goes further than just scoring goals. With his recent performances, he is knocking hard on the door for a Bafana Bafana call up.
