Tottenham Hotspur manager Glenn Hoddle admitted that their 2-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in the International Bid Club Competition at Newlands on Tuesday did not come easy despite the English club taking the lead within seconds into the game.

Following the 2-1 defeat against PSL champions Orlando Pirates in Durban, the Premiership club came out with guns blazing and went into the driving seat just after 27 seconds.

Portuguese international Helder Postiga's shot from the edge of the box hit Robbie Keane's leg and deflected past a flat-footed Brian Baloyi and into the Chiefs goal and Matthew Etherington put the matter beyond reach on 42.

While Chiefs appeared outclassed in certain departments, Hoddle - who was impressed by playing conditions at Newlands - said this their toughest match against a strong opposition. For their efforts, Amakhosi never gave up the fighting spirit and could have easily snatched a draw to force the game into penalties.

"Pre-season is always the best time to test yourself and have a look at a few youngsters. Results are not always important at this stage but it’s nice for the managers to get a win from time to time," said Hoddle.

"We had a good performance. Supporters here were looking for a result and we were looking a good pre-season run. Both teams have done very well. You don’t get an easy game in world football any more. Everyone getting closer to everyone else," said Hoddle.

Hoddle, who conducted a number of clinics with his players in a number of areas in Cape Town, heaped praises on the South African football and predicted that in a few years to come the rainbow nation will be up there with some of the best football nations.

"SA football should be proud of what you have achieved. You’ve got some good youngsters with great skill," he said.
