Midfielder Jabulani Mendu missed the opportunity to represent Kaizer Chiefs in the first round of the Coca-Cola Cup against Santos in Cape Town after twisting his ankle in a hotel corridor.

Mendu said he was walking in the corridor when this unfortunate injury struck. He twisted his right ankle and could not recover in time for the Santos game.

"It was a minor injury and we had to leave him out as precautionary measure," said Amakhosi coach Ted Dumitru.

The Amakhosi coach said he was annoyed by the reaction from the Santos game. "I am disappointed with this craziness and one-sided reporting about the Santos game," said Dumitru.

Overall the Chiefs coach said he was happy with the outcome but added that the team needed to improve a certain aspect of their game. "There’s another twisted sentiment by one of the reporters from Cape Town who claimed that I said Santos played well. They were certainly helped by the wind while we struggled a bit under these conditions.

"We do not play well under windy conditions and we are still guilty of not penetrating and being forceful when weather conditions do not suit us but we really need to improve on this," Dumitru said.
