Kaizer Chiefs midfield general Tinashe Nengomasha stands on the cusp of history as he gets the opportunity to overtake former Amakhosi legend Thabo Mooki’s record of appearing in ten Cup finals in the PSL era, should he feature for the club this Saturday evening when Chiefs face Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 Final.

Heading into what will be his 11th Cup final for Chiefs in nine consecutive seasons Nengomasha commenting to Kaizerchiefs.com on what could be a milestone outing for him on Saturday said, “it seemed like just the other day I joined Chiefs and came to the country from Zimbabwe.

Never once did I imagine that it would possible for me to catch up to a record, and perhaps better one set by a legendary player like Thabo Mooki. I am truly grateful that in all the time that I have been with the club I have managed to represent them in these championship games and helped them win titles, I hope that Saturday night will be a night to remember.”

In the previous ten cup finals that he has played in, Nengomasha has lost in just two of them the last being in the MTN8 Final (SAA Supa8) in 2004 against SuperSport United, his aim is to ensure that Chiefs manage to once again add more silverware to their collection.

“Every Cup final is memorable they were all memorable, of the ten previous finals I have played in my team has managed to win 8 of them. An 80% win rate is good in finals and I hope that the ALL MIGHTY gives me the strength to help the team once more, winning is always good and we would like to bring the trophy home.”

The Zimbabwean strong man also let in as to what he believes are key factors in helping a team win a cup final, “I do feel that being mentally prepared for a cup final is essential and it can ultimately lead to your team lifting the prize.

" You do want a situation where you find that in the rounds leading up to the final you were excellent and also you cannot just assume that you will carry on getting the same results. You need to be ready mentally and physically as well as display the same hunger that you did in reaching the final if you want to lift the trophy.”

In all Mooki appeared in 12 Cup Finals two of which the 1994 and 1995 MTN8 (then BP Top8) finals were held in seasons prior to the formation of the PSL in 1996, Tinashe should he feature on Saturday will move a step closer towards equaling Mooki’s all- time Cup Finals appearance record for Chiefs.
