Kaizer Chiefs midfield cum striker, Gert Schalkwyk is confident that Bafana Bafana will turn the corner on Tuesday evening, 30 September 2008 when they take on Malawi in an international friendly. The game kick off is at 19h00 and will be played at Germiston Stadium.

Gert, together with teammates at Chiefs, Itumeleng Khune, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Reneilwe Letsholonyane getting his first call up, are part of the 23 men squad announced by Bafana Bafana coach last week for the friendly international against Southern African neighbours, Malawi.

The 1996 African Cup of Nations champions’ desperately need to come back to their winning ways after failing to qualify for the African Nations Cup to be held in Angola in 2010. This followed a loss against Super Eagles of Nigeria. Three days later they lost by another odd goal from Guinea.

They meet a rejuvenated Malawi team coached by former Free State Stars coach, Kinnah Phiri. Phiri has guided the Flames to victories against Djibouti (8-1), and Egypt (1-0), but Gert said he and his teammates are not intimidated by the Flames record that has also seen them losing the other two of their qualifying games.

“We are going to win the game. The guys are ready and we are all fired up to win against Malawi” said Gert.

Gert who makes a return to the national team after almost two years told kaizerchiefs.com that he is happy to be back in the squad.

“I am delighted to be back in the national team. I did not expect to be back so soon. I know that I have pushed very hard to regain my form. There is more work to be done though and I am the first to admit that I cannot rest on my laurels after having few good outings” he added.
