Isaac Kungwane is probably one of the most exciting players to have donned the gold and black. His charisma, jolly personality on and off the field made him a hit with fans, both young and old. He took time to speak to kaizerchiefs.com about his time as a Glamour Boy.

My transfer…

I was promoted to the first team late in 1990 the same year I joined the reserve team. In the reserve I played with the likes of Tshepo Molatedi, George Shasha and many other guys.

My debut…

It was in 1991 against Mamelodi Sundowns in the then Iwisa Spectacular. I was just a youngster then and wanted to have fun. I was excited to be playing alongside some of the great players in the game.

My favourite goal…

It has to be the goal I scored in 1996 against Michau Warriors. Calvin Marlin was a keeper and I think I was not far from the half way line. I remember getting a call up to the national team after scoring that goal.

I did not score lot of goals during my career because I wanted to score spectacular goals. People also talk to me about the corner kick I scored against an amateur team called Dinonyana back in 1991. I scored from a corner kick…but it was a fluke. It was windy on the day (Laughing)

My favourite game…

It has to be the league game when we beat Orlando Pirates 3-1 in 1991. Fani Madida scored a brace for us with Shane McGregor getting the other one. I created two of those goals. I really had fun that afternoon in a packed old FNB Stadium. It is a game that I will never ever forget – beating Pirates was special!

Team you wanted to beat most…

I can’t choose a single team – I wanted to win all the time.(Laughing)

Best friend/Roommate…

I was cool with all the guys and spent time with everyone. I was of course more close to Pollen (Ndlanya) as we joined the Club more or less at the same time. In fact all strikers wanted to be close to me - I do not know why!

Maybe it was because of my passes…I seriously do not know (Laughing)

I also shared rooms with everyone in the team. We were not allowed to have permanent roommates for team spirit sake and I was happy to share with anyone.

At Chiefs I was the one who used to organize parties…had the latest music as well. Chiefs are always about style, how you look matters. It was fun but we all wanted to win against all the teams.

Toughest opponent…

There were quite a few, it would be difficult to single one. Ernest “Wire” Chirwali (Mtawali) was quite handful. There was also Roger Fetumba and Serame Letsoaka who is currently one of the top coaches in the country.

My best Coach…

Jeff Butler! He understood me as a person, my strengths and weaknesses as a player. Jeff also fought my battles…always protective of me. I talk to him two even three times every week. We are still quite close.

My best memory at Chiefs…

It has to be when Teenage Dladla almost forced me into signing for Chiefs. I had both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates sniffing. One of the things that persuaded me to join Chiefs was when Teenage Dladla promised to give me his no.11 jersey. I was moved.

I cannot put the feeling into words on how it felt donning a jersey no that was used by a legend. I had to give the jersey up though in 1992 after injuring my knee. The number became heavier for me. I still have a lot of respect for Teenage (Dladla) even today. I though the jersey would have been retired by now.
