Fernandez meets Fernandez

Journalists turning up at the FNB Stadium on Thursday afternoon where the Amakhosi took on the German Mittelrhein regional team would have been surprised to see the German’s team list with 1.

Fernandez at the top of the sheet. Firstly Fernandez is not a German name and is a more common Spanish or Portuguese surname; the second surprise was many thought that the Amakhosi’s goal minder Rowen Fernandez was standing in goal for the Germans who many assumed might have been short a man or more.

In fact the Mittelrhein goalkeeper Benedikt Fernandez father is of Spanish decent and his mother hails from Germany and he was born in the German city of Leverkusen, Chiefs goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez is of Portuguese ancestry and found it amusing when it was brought to his attention that his opposite number shared his surname.

“It is very strange to find a German Fernandez and to top it all he is a goalkeeper, stranger occurrences have occurred in football though” added and amused Rowen Fernandez.

After the game the two Fernandez swopped Jersey’s and the German version of the story, wanted Rowen’s pair of goalkeeping gloves even though they are manufactured in Germany.

The reason for this being that Rowen Fernandez is sponsored by a German goalkeeping glove manufacturer and has the name Fernandez printed on the outside of the gloves which is specially made for the Chiefs number one.
