‘There is no doubt that the entire country and neighbouring states have caught the fever of the greatest soccer showdown on the South African season calendar and as football lovers have begun the debate over who the season’s champions will be, even cabinet is divided into two, when it comes to Chiefs and Pirates’, these were the words of Kaizer Chiefs PRO Putco Mafani at a media conference held at the FNB stadium on Monday, 25 April 2005.

Amakhosi are the defending champions and they host title favourites Orlando Pirates, who are lately known as ‘the Happy People’ because of their results and fast way of playing. The two giants clash on Saturday, 30th April 2005 at the same venue at 3:15pm but Mafani says fans of these clubs will descend on Nasrec as early as 06H00 before the gates open at 09H00.

“It is a known factor that no one likes to be at home when watching this game and so we will have the biggest crowd at this venue since time immemorial”, said Mafani.

The two clubs’ sponsors Vodacom and pre-paid airtime partners ZOK have come to the party to ensure the fans are treated to a fun-filled day.

“There are 20 000 reasons to get to the stadium early on Derby Day, and another 20 000 to look forward to half-time”, said Julius Ndevu, Vodacom’s Executive Head-marketing, Gauteng region. “The Soweto Derby is a much-looked-forward-to date on the national football calendar, and as the title sponsor of both defending PSL champions Chiefs and 2003/2004 PSL winners Pirates, we at Vodacom are delighted to be involved with a football match of this magnitude. We are pleased to be involved in the big match build up and trust that the Soweto Derby will be befitting for a Soccer Crazy Supporter, in a Soccer Crazy Country.” said Ndevu

Vodacom’s Money or the Box competition is set to have fans focused on the field right through the halftime interval, with R30 000 in cash up for grabs, football fans are hard at work pressing their cellular phone keypads, in order to send the magic entry line ‘Yebo Amakhosi’ to competition line number ‘34383’.

Five lucky football fans will be drawn from the competition entries, and will be invited to watch the Soweto Derby from the President’s Suite, before making their way to the playing field at the halftime break, where Chiefs PRO Putco Mafani will allow each contestant to draw a lucky number and be allocated a lucky box in the competition.

The lucky contestant who chooses the correct box will take home R20 000 in cash, while the other four participants will each receive R 2500 worth of Kaizer Chiefs/Vodacom prizes.

The Vodacom Foundation is also making dreams come true for 22 orphaned children. The youngsters will be the mascots for the big day and will lead their soccer heroes on to the pitch.

Another exciting initiative will be provided by ZOK who will launch to the public at this soccer stadium for the first time, “As it was launched, a few weeks ago at Vodaworld, ZOK cellular is an exclusive partnership between three of the largest communities and brands in South Africa-the ZCC, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. On Saturday, (D-Day) the ZOK starter packs, exclusively powered by Vodacom will be available at Soccer City, offering fantastic value at R25 only with a pre-loaded airtime of R29, a free ZOK sticker and a ZOK phone badge.”, Mafani said.

There will also be major cash prizes available on the activation of the ZOK starter packs, with R100 000 in cash prizes available and awarded on a monthly basis. “Once you have activated your ZOK starter pack, call the ZOK line 082 2340 ZOK (965) to register for the competition. Your ZOK number is the only number where you will be reached for this competition”, Mafani said.

Entertainment will include the Penguin parachutes and kwaito music sensation Kabelo, of “Love me or Leave me alone” fame. The curtain raisers will also be a feast of football and fun with the Doc Khumalo Invitational taking on the Ace Ntsoelengoe Invitational in what is dubbed as the IWISA Legends Challenge to kick off at 12H30. The Legends sponsors IWISA have pledged tons and tons of Maize Meal with each goal scored during this game being donated to a charity organization nominated by the club. Iwisa will also give a R1000 cash prize to a Legend that demonstrates the most flair on the day.

Tickets are selling for R20 at Computicket outlets and will not be sold at the stadium on match day. The game will be an all ticket affair, “Itikiti Esandleni”.
