Lesego Thomas (8) could not believe his eyes when he met Kaizer Chiefs legend, Doctor Khumalo and the reigning Kaizer Chiefs Player of the Year, Itumeleng Khune at the Village on Tuesday afternoon.

An enthusiastic Kaizer Chiefs fan, the young boy growing up was always nagging his father, McDonald Lesia for them to go to the Kaizer Chiefs Village to meet his hero, Itumeleng Khune but he got more than he bargained for as Doctor Khumalo was also there to welcome him.

“I want to be a goalkeeper like him (Itumeleng Khune) one day” Lesego told kaizerchiefs.com pointing towards Khune.

His father related the story, “He was always nagging me that we must come to Naturena. It was difficult for me as his father to tell him that we might not be able to get access to see Itumeleng Khune and when Walter (Steenbok) called me on his birthday on Saturday to tell me that arrangements to meet Itu (Itumeleng Khune) and Doctor (Khumalo) were confirmed he got so excited” said the proud father.

“Lesego’s mother committed suicide in front of him on the 17 June 2007. This was a way for me to cheer him up. He is a strong boy” he said close to tears.

“He is the one who called me while I was sleeping at the back of our house. He related the story as he apparently was watching his mother as she was committing suicide. I tried to save her, but it was too late as she died the next day in the hospital” he added.

Doctor invited the young boy to the Development to train with other youngsters for the day. Kaizer Chiefs Brand Manager, Dara Carroll was at hand to give the youngster Kaizer Chiefs merchandise and a Nike ball.

McDonald thanked Kaizer Chiefs on behalf of Lesego for making his son’s dream come true.

“He is now the happiest child on earth and I want to thank you very much for the gesture,” he said.

Kaizerchiefs.com would like to wish the young Lesego all the best in all his endeavours, including his dream of donning the black and gold jersey!
