Coke Cup semifinal thriller rained out

Heavy downpour forced the epic Coca-Cola Cup semifinal clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Wits University at FNB Stadium on Saturday to be postponed. The sides were tied 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Rain started bucketing down shortly after the restart but the pitch was still in a playing condition. However, as the game wore on, the state of the field deteriorated and four players were booked in the process due to untimed tackles.

Both sides were still tied 1-1 when referee Ace Ngcobo finally decided to call off the match on 90 minutes. Even before then there were calls from Chiefs coach Ted Dumitru for the game to be stopped.

The fourth official also tried to relay the message to the referee through Wits skipper Charles Yohane but the he decided to carry on with the match until 90 minutes. After consultation with his assistants, the game was called off.

The match will now be replayed at the same venue next Wednesday but kick-off time is yet to be confirmed.

The Students had their noses ahead as early as the 18th minute when Alois Bunjira stunned the Amakhosi faithful with a superb header following a great supply from Gert Schalkwyk on the right. The Chiefs defence were caught napping and allowed Schalkwyk ample room to maneuver.

A lapse in concentration from Wits allowed Chiefs back in the game on the stroke of halftime. Bunjira turned from hero to villain when he played a short back pass to his keeper but striker Patrick Mayo was quick to react and got to the ball first to send a delightful chip over Roberts, who had until this game only conceded one goal in 13 matches.

But the goal came to nothing, as was the Wits goal due to the replay.
