The Soweto Derby

There is nothing new to say about this upcoming game, The Soweto Derby. I am honoured as a Coach to be part of this great occasion.

The atmosphere in the derby is always electrifying and playing in front of 94 000 supporters always brings the best out of the players. I am sure both sets of fans will enjoy the upcoming game.

I think it is also very important to note that the standard of the Premier League keeps on improving. The quality of the football product is definitely better than when I arrived here. I have been able to watch a couple of games and I am impressed with what I have seen. It shows that the World Cup 2010 contributed immensely to the development of the game in South Africa.

There is lot of interest in this derby because both teams are challenging for league honours. We cannot make a mistake though and forget about other teams like Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns. There is still a long way to go and I think the league will be decided in the last 5 games of the season.

We started with the preparations for this game on Tuesday. I am satisfied by the way the players have responded and one thing about the upcoming game as a Coach you do not need to motivate players. We are going into this game without any injuries or suspensions. This can be a good headache for the Coach. Even at this stage I am not sure who will start the game. We enjoy games against Orlando Pirates and this time around it will not be different. Our objectives remain to come back with positive results. We play each game to win.

I have heard that Orlando Pirates will be missing a couple of players for the Soweto Derby including goalkeeper, Moneeb Josephs. This does not change our approach in preparing for this game. If I were playing for Kaizer Chiefs today, I would also refuse to miss the derby just because of injury. So we are preparing for the strongest Orlando Pirates on Saturday. From the Coach’s point of view, I do not prepare differently for the derby. I go through my normal routine because as a Coach, 3 points against Orlando Pirates are as important as 3 points against Mpumalanga Black Aces.

I look forward to seeing you at FNB Stadium come Saturday, 26 February 2011. Kick off is at 15h30.
