Chiefs/Ajax tickets selling like hotcakes
Chiefs/Ajax tickets selling like hotcakes

For the past three days, Ellis Park Stadium has been selling tickets for the highly demanded Castle Premiership top clash between home side Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town's Ajax.

Both sides have an unbeaten run in the league and it will take a record-breaking spirit for the Amakhosi, on home soil to shoot on top of the log at the expense of the visitors.

The Ellis Park stadium has proved to be the Amakhosi's happy hunting ground and lecture hall, since the opening of the current season.

It was at this top international venue that the Naturena based glamour side enjoyed sweet victory over rivals Sundowns beating them 2-0, followed by another spectacular performance recently when coach Ted Dumitru’s boys walloped Black Leopards 5-0, scoring a record seven goals from the only two home games.

In a congested fixture weekend, featuring an SAA Super 8 Cup final, ironically playing on the same afternoon as the Chiefs-Ajax encounter, this game is set to be the biggest game of the weekend, taking into consideration the positions of the two clubs on the log currently and the top form, which both coaches Ted Dumitru and Gordon Igesund boast about their charges.

There will be no love lost between the two coaches as Igesund would hate to be labeled as a 'given-loser' to Chiefs and Dumitru on the other side would love to consolidate his promises to deliver to the club boss Kaizer Motaung, the league championship trophy, which has eluded the glamour boys of Phefeni for the past ten years.

"There's always talk of hoodoo teams in buildups to games that involve the so-called small teams that are generally regarded as our tough opposition. That is nothing but a mental thing and we are currently working on that," said club coach and mentor Ted Dumitru at training on Thursday.

"I had that situation in one of my very first assignment at Chiefs. Grinaker Rangers used to beat Chiefs in league and cup matches.

"As such they were regarded as some kind of a hoodoo to Chiefs. My first objective was to destroy that tradition and we beat them convincingly.

"Strangely and very interestingly, Grinaker stopped their sponsorship for the club immediately after that."

It looks like Dumitru has good plans in place for Ajax as they are a top side playing well and scoring crucial goals when it matters, with Orlando Pirates reject Josep Ngake enjoying his new lease of life.

The diminutive coach must be pretty relieved by the number of options he has, his boys seem fired up and getting ready to die on the pitch if needs be.

The biggest problem for local coaches now is which Chiefs player to get worried about and plan around, because the side is firing on all cylinders.

"Admittedly, sometimes you have to beat the top side to get on top and this is the moment. To us it's like a cup final!" said club spokesperson Mputumi Putco Mafani.

"Gates open at 12h00 on Sunday to commence a razzmatazz filled programme with Sony Music artists, Kamazu and Malaika, plus some exciting moments for giveaways from our sponsors Nike.

"Before that, we will have a curtain raiser featuring the sponsors of Kaizer Chiefs to play the Amakhosi celebrities, including the likes of Mdu Masilela, Doctor Khumalo, Ace Khuse, Kabelo and Glenn Lewis from MetroFM, Bad Boy T from Y-fm, Mashamplani, Bobsteak Motaung and Putco Mafani from the Chiefs Village, Chippa Mangena of the 'Wonk'umuntu lana uyajayva' fame and many more," added an upbeat Mafani.

Tickets are still selling at the Ellis Park stadium for R20 adults and R10 for juveniles until Sunday afternoon.

The Gold Card holding supporters will be ushered through the main gate to their designated seating area, where they will be met by Supporters Club Administrator Shupi Nkgadima.

Mafani went on to explain that supporters with game vouchers would need to produce their valid or current silver or yellow card to exchange the voucher for a ticket.
