Hunt came up to the PSL with Seven Stars at the start of the 1998-1999 season. In what will be their eighth game facing a team coached by Hunt going back to the 1998-1999 season, he has faced Chiefs six times in cup competitions with three different teams, with this coming weekends game seeing him leading out a fourth team into battle against The Amakhosi.
In all this time, Hunt has only tasted victory over Chiefs once during the opening round of the 1999-2000 Rothmans Cup, one of the previous names of the Telkom Knockout. Hunt was also at the helm of Moroka Swallows the last time Chiefs won this trophy when it was still known as the Coca Cola Cup. The Amakhosi defeated Hunt's Swallows team in the semifinal and eventually went on to win the trophy in December 2004, beating Hunts current team SuperSport in the final.
Hunting down
There is a statistic which reads that every time Chiefs defeat SuperSport United in a Cup match, they go on to win that particular tournament. Similarly, whenever Chiefs have been successful over a team coached by Hunt, they might not have won it but have gone all the way to the final of that competition.
During the 1998-1999 season the first time Chiefs and Hunt clashed in a cup game, The Amakhosi defeated Hunt's Seven Stars team 2-0, and eventually went all the way to the BOB Save Super Bowl Final where Chiefs eventually lost to SuperSport United.
During the 1999-2000 BOB Save Super Bowl The Amakhosi defeated Hunts Hellenic 4-1 away from home in the second round and were eventually crowned BOB Save Super Bowl Champs a few months later. During his time with Moroka Swallows, Chiefs twice defeated Hunt's team in the semifinals of the SAA Supa8.
In 2004-2005 The Amakhosi lost in the final to SuperSport United. Last season, after defeating Hunt's Swallows for a second time in the SAA Supa 8 semifinals, Chiefs went on to defeat Hunt's current team SuperSport United in the Final.
As was the case in 2004-2005, when after overpowering a Swallows team coached by Hunt, The Amakhosi progressed to the 2004-2005 Coca Cola Cup Final and again defeated SuperSport United in the final.
Ertugral vs Hunt
While Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral and Gavin Hunt might be friends when their respective teams are not playing, the two coaches have had a healthy rivalry in cup competitions going back to 1999. It was during Ertugral’s inaugural season with The Amakhosi in 1999-2000 that he first came face to face with Hunt in the opening round of the Rothmans Cup.
Things started out well enough for Ertugral and Chiefs as they won the first leg away from home 2-1 in Cape Town, but in the return leg things did not go well for Chiefs and Hunt's Hellenic won the game 3-0.
Later that same season Ertugral exacted revenge of sorts when a Thabang Lebese brace and further goals from Siyabonga Nomvete and Robert Nauseb guided a rampant Kaizer Chiefs team to a 4-1 victory over Hellenic in a BOB Save Super Bowl game.
They renewed acquaintances last season during the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals when Ertugral, who was coaching Ajax Cape Town at the time, overcame Hunt's Swallows team 2-1 to progress to the semifinals. Ajax and Ertugral eventually lost in the final, but with Ertugral currently leading in the personal battle between the two distinguished coaches, he will be well aware that victory over Hunt and SuperSport could be pointing towards a Telkom Knockout Final place for The Amakhosi - and there is also that other incentive of making it cup win number three over his friend Gavin Hunt.
