A second half strike from Serge Djiehoua handed Thanda Royal Zulu their first ever win over The Amakhosi in a PSL match. Djiehoua managed to grab all three points for his team when he found the game's only goal in the 62nd minute, finishing off a move started by Bernard Parker.

Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral had to watch this game from the pavilion as he was serving the second of a two match touchline ban, and would not have been happy to see the manner in which his team went down. The Amakhosi were unimaginative in attack and times looked as though they had no answer to getting past what looked like a very organized Thanda defence. On the odd occasion when they did manage to get sight of goal it was a case of poor finishing which let them down.

The bolstering of their attack in the second half by adding some weight up front in the form of the striking duo of Kaizer Motaung Junior and Mabhudi Khenyeza and the attack-minded Michael Nkambule, Chiefs were able to enjoy more possession of the ball. Ultimately though they could not find a goal which would have earned them a point from the game, the closest Chiefs came to a goal was when David Obua headed against the cross bar in the final ten minutes of the match.

Spencer close

Derrick Spencer went close to giving Chiefs the lead in the sixth minute, after Siphiwe Tshabalala whipped in a corner from the left, the ball was cleared towards Derrick Spencer who was lurking on the edge of the Thanda 18 yard area. Spencer though did not wait for the ball and ran towards it and connected with it just as he entered the Thanda danger zone, his effort was headed goal wards and beat Kitenge in the Royal goal but was cleared off the line by Thanda captain Tshepo Mashishi.

No connection

In what can only be described as totally uncharacteristic, Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune showed that after all he is human. In the 21st minute he came off his line to grab a cross by Musa Nyatama across goal and missed the ball completely and it fell Serge Djiehoua. The Ivorian who is currently on loan at Thanda from Chiefs could not properly connect with the ball and the Chiefs defence were able to clear the danger.

Near misses

The Thanda rear guard, marshalled by the Ghanaian Ahmed Mohammed, was able to prevent Chiefs from getting into the final third, which resulted in Chiefs having to try their luck from distance. After some enterprising play by Siphiwe Tshabalala in the 34th minute Chiefs were able to breach the Thanda rear guard, as Mandla Masango headed Tshabalala’s inch perfect cross centimetres wide of goal. Thuso Phala came close to giving Chiefs the lead just past the hour mark, after he collected an Itumeleng Khune clearance he charged into the opposition goal mouth and turned a defender but he shot across goal and missed the mark.

Djiehoua history

Serge Djiehoua created a piece of history when he became the first Thanda Royal player to score a goal against Chiefs, as he managed to find the back of the net in the 62nd minute. The Ivorian collected a pass from Bernard Parker and turned Cyril Nzama inside out before storming into the Chiefs penalty area with just Itumeleng Khune to beat he tried curling the ball around the Chiefs keeper. Who did manage to get a hand onto the ball but could do little else as it went past him to give Thanda the lead and what proved to be the match winner.
