An 81st minute goal by Orlando Pirates substitute Katelgo Mashego condemned Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-0 loss against their Soweto Rivals at the FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon, in an MTN 8 Semi-Final second leg clash. Pirates won the tie 2-1 on aggregate.

Chiefs had defeated Pirates in the last four official cup clashes between the teams but a fifth consecutive win was not to be as they were beaten at the FNB Stadium, in a came which both teams were looking to win Pirates went on the offensive early on.

Happy Jele had a go at goal from way out in the opening ten minutes he could not find the target, Ezenwa Otorgu was using his physical advantage to take on the Chiefs backline and in the openingtwenty minutes managed to create a chance for himself as well as set up Daine Klate and Isaac Chansa but all failed to materialize.

Chiefs best chance in the opening quarter of the game fell to midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane, who drove Mandla Masango’s layup some 22 yards from goal toward Josephs but he missed the target.

The Chiefs midfielder did have the option of playing the ball to his right where Jimmy Tau had managed to ghost in behind the Pirates rear guard.

At the midway stage of the first half Siphiwe Tshabalala tested Moeneeb Josephs with a sweetly struck left footed drive at goal in a similar position to Letsholonyane’s earlier effort. The shot was powerful and the Pirates keeper could only parry the ball but his defence came to his rescue and kicked the ball out.

Just past the half hour mark Valery Nahayo had to intercept Otorogu who collected a long ball from the back on the right wing, as he cut into the Chiefs 18 yard area Nahayo stormed into to boot clear the ball. Close to half time Itumeleng Khune punched clear Dikgang Mabalane’s free kick from the left to ensure the teams went into the break goalless.

After the restart Musona ran onto a long kick from Khune got past the Pirates defence and lobbed the ball over Pirates keeper Josephs but his effort missed the target that happened in the 51st minute.

Mandla Masango went for goal on 57 minutes his effort was deflected and managed to find its way to Yende stationed a few yards from goal, his powerful shot flew past Josephs but hit the Pirates cross bar.

There were to be two key misses for Chiefs in the second half on 78 minute Musona drove an effort at goal from the right of the Pirates 18 yard area wide , two minutes later on the left Josta Dladla picked out Sthembiso Ngocob with a quick short pass but his cross goal effort went wide of Josephs.

Pirates regrouped and launched a counter attack down the right and eventually a dangerous ball was sent in by Segolela which Mashego and Dominic Isaacs attacked the Pirates attacker managed to get a feint touch to the ball and hit past Khune to give Pirates the lead.

In the latter stages of the game Pirates were awarded a penalty when Nahayo pulled back Segolela, Mahamutsa could not find the target and misfired his spot kick.

Nevertheless Pirates held on to win 1-0 and will meet Moroka Swallows in the final Chiefs for a second consecutive season are eliminated at the Semi – Final stage of the MTN 8 competition.
