Kaizer Chiefs put a stop in the title charge of Ajax Cape Town as the Amakhosi defeated the league leaders 4-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane to record their largest ever victory over the Urban Warriors.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane opened the scoring for Chiefs in the 21st minute followed by another from Knowledge Musona which took his goal tally to 14 in league action this season. Siphiwe Tshabalala scored a brace grabbing his first in the 33rd minute and another on 68 to see Chiefs through to their biggest win of the campaign.

Chiefs were hard done by as Mandla Masango was brought down in the Ajax penalty area by Hans Vonk just two minutes into the game, the referee opted not to give Chiefs a spot kick.

Ten minutes after that Masango went wide with a chance on goal, five minutes later Musona dragged the ball past the whites of Vonk after being set up by Letsholonyane down the right.

Chiefs early pressure paid off in the 21st minute when they took the lead, Valery Nahayo started the move playing the ball to Masango whose delicate side pass found Josta Dladla who in turn sent the ball to Letsholonyane who drove it past Vonk for his third goal of the season to put the Amakhosi ahead.

The troublesome Dladla was at it again three minutes later sending the ball from the right past the Ajax rear guard, Musona came sliding in and was unable to make contact with the ball just a few yards from goal this happening on 24 minutes.

Five minutes later in a rear foray up front Thembinkosi Fanteni was able to turn his marker inside the Chiefs 18 yard but his effort was straight at Itumeleng Khune, Thulani Serero was sublime in the initial build up work to the move.

In the 31st minute Letsholonyane fed the through to Musona in a one on one with Vonk the Ajax keeper managed to stick a foot out to block the ball, Clayton Daniels managed to clear the loose ball.

Two minutes later Musona would have the opportunity to celebrate his 14th league goal of the season, an Ajax Cape Town attack was broken down as Khune stopped Khama Billiat in his tracks, Masango attacked up the right before getting the ball to Dladla who in turn gave it to Tshabalala.

He glided past the defence and on the right hand by line cut in goal wards to send the ball over to Musona who flew in the air to head the ball into an empty net to double Chiefs lead.

With half time fast approaching the Masango - Dladla combination were at it again with the latter picking up Masango’s lay up from the right before rolling the ball into the path of the on rushing Tsahbalala who sided footed the ball past a stranded Vonk to give Chiefs a 3-0 lead heading into half time.

Knowing that the title was on the line Ajax came out looking to get back onto the score sheet in rapid time and wet on the offensive early on, Fanteni went for goal with an effort from distance in the 49th minute but his effort could not find the target.

Soon thereafter it was the turn off Billiat as he attempted to test Khune from way out, his 25 yard drive at goal it too was off target, in the 62nd minute Serero’s cross into the box was cleared only to Fanteni who went for goal but again his effort failed to hit the target.

On 64 minutes Musona could have scored another after he did well to control a well floated ball from Dladla, he hit into the ground and past Vonk and onto the right hand up right.

As Ajax sought a way back in the game Chiefs effectively killed off the match as a contest when they managed to score a fourth, again it was sublime one touch football that got Chiefs into the final third.

Where Masango found himself with just Vonk to beat unselfishly he laid the ball to his left where Tshabalala was able to guide the ball home into an empty net, Chiefs fourth goal coming on 68 minutes.

Jimmy Tau sent the ball goalwards in the 72nd minute which got to Dladla who initial effort was blocked by Hlatshwayo who came sliding in to block the ball, on the follow up Letsholonyane saw his attempt hit the body of Vonk

Khune denied Ajax as he lunged off the ground to block Serero’s driven effort from 18 yards out for a corner in the 80th minute, a minute after that the Chiefs keeper was at his best once again blocking Nhlanhla Vilakazi’s effort a close range with his feet after the Ajax substitute had been played in on goal by a Daniels threw ball.

Victory over Ajax and with Orlando Pirates drawing away to Santos and Mamelodi Sundowns losing to Maritzburg United means that the Amakhosi are still in with a chance of winning the league title on the final day of the season on May 21st.
