The Amakhosi go into their league encounter with Golden Arrows on Wednesday evening with the knowledge that nothing but a win will suffice, as they aim to lift themselves off the lower half of the table and into the top eight spots.

Victory for Chiefs will see them improve on their current eleventh place standing and will give them sight of Arrows who are at present in fourth position on the standings, Muhsin Ertugral would like for nothing more than for his team to finish the year with the maximum nine points available to them.

Should Chiefs manage to garner all the points on offer from their next three games they would most certainly end the year in the top five positions, which is Muhsin Ertugral’s aim.

Chiefs begin with a game against an Arrows team who have stuck with most of their squad from last season with Mabhudi Khenyeza one of the most notable departees as he left Arrows for Chiefs at the end of last season.

The Kwa-Zulu Natal team have been able to shock the league with some of their results this season, perhaps what is more notable about their play is their dogged determination to win matches, as they fought all the way over the weekend when they won a fiercestly contested battle against Jomo Cosmos.

As the first round of league matches draws to a close Arrows have exceeded all expectations and are in a very strong position in the league and are playing like a team who are capable of a top five finish when the season ends off in May. The Amakhosi know that they once again have their work cut out for them but the return of Shaun Bartlett will have come at the right time for Muhsin Ertugral, Bartlett had been a central figure in Chiefs set up prior to his recent injury and his return in attack will be a welcome one.

The History

The first meeting between Chiefs and Arrows took place in November 2000, when Arrows played host to The Amakhosi and despite taking the lead through Thabo Mooki Chiefs wearing white on that occasion ended up losing the game 3-1. Later that same season there was drama prior to Chiefs meeting with Arrows at the Ellis Park Stadium on the 20th May, as title chasing Chiefs were dealt a serious blow as they only managed to play to a goalless draw with Arrows. In the end that draw cost them the league Championship that season, even they won their next three games a win over Arrows would have put them above arch rivals Orlando Pirates who eventually landed the title.

Chiefs defeated Arrows for the first time in a league game in February 2002 thanks to a Stanton Fredericks goal in the 58th minute, it was a last gasp goal two years later in February 2004 from Fredericks at the FNB Stadium that saw Chiefs win for the second time against Arrows.

Over the past two seasons Chiefs have turned around their fortunes against Arrows in four league games between the 2005 – 2006 and 2006 – 2007 season, The Amakhosi have won four of them and were victorious away from home against Arrows for the first time in September 2005 in a 3-1 rout at the ABSA Stadium in Durban. With Shoes Moshoeu, Fabian McCarthy and Serge Djiehoua scored for Chiefs while Mabhudi Khenyeza found a consolation for Arrows.

Chiefs followed that victory up with a second later in the season at the FNB Stadium and it was the inaugural time that either team since the 2000 – 2001 season had won both the home and away matches in a league season. The following season in 2006 – 2007 there was to be late drama when the teams met at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban; Siyabonga Nkosi gave Chiefs the lead just after the hour mark with his first league goal for The Amakhosi.

Mabhudi Khenyeza then popped up to level matters with ten minutes to go, Derrick Spencer found a goal in the last five minutes of the game to ensure a dramatic victory for Chiefs, it was also to be Derricks first goal for Chiefs. In the return game played earlier this year it looked as though the teams were headed for a stale mate, Norman Smith though managed to sneak in an injury time winner for Arrows.

Look out for

Itumeleng Khune who was left out of Chiefs squad for their game against Amazulu returned to the starting eleven over the weekend when The Amakhosi paid a visit to the Mother City, and were held to a goalless draw by Santos. Khune stood firm in blustering winds and managed to keep his goal in tact by keeping both the Santos attack and the elements at bay, he showed his maturity as a player by not letting the physical conditions affect his game and did exceptionally well given the circumstances under which the game was played.

Chiefs striker Mabhudi Khenyeza in Arrows faces up to the team that he spent six years at, and it was the same club which gave him the opportunity to make a name for himself, facing his old friends could be a huge motivator for Khenyeza and he could land up amongst the goals.

Kagiso Dikgacoi was amongst the goals for Arrows during their recent two goal victory over Jomo Cosmos, he did manage to find the net in spectacular fashion as he managed to beat Avril Phali of Cosmos with a wonderful shot from the a tight angle on the left. Arrows other goal scorer Vusumuzi Vilakazi also looked dangerous against Cosmos and grabbed the other goal for the men in green and gold, like Dikgacoi is an exciting talent who can at times be a handful for the opposition.
