Chiefs on brink of 500 PSL Goals

Posted in News on Dec 28, 2006.

Kaizer Chiefs recent unbeaten run which saw them in eight weeks move up ten places in the PSL standings from being at twelfth spot in November, to ending off 2006 in second place a point behind log leaders Silver Stars has been remarkable to say the least.

Chiefs run in to 2006 has been a phenomenal one as they went undefeated in six games and along the way scored an impressive seventeen goals. As Chiefs closed out 2006 with a flurry of goals, the club moved to a combined goal tally since the inception of the PSL back in the 1996 – 1997 to 499 goals.

The Amakhosi who have found the back of the net twenty four time this season so far lead the rest of the field in both goals scored and goal difference, with twenty four goals scored and just ten conceded Chiefs have a plus ten goal difference. The twenty-four goals that Chiefs have scored are seven more than the next closest team, which is third placed Bidvest Wits The students have seventeen goals to their name so far during the 2006 – 2007 season.

As Chiefs began playing out their PSL fixtures in 2006 they began December on 487 goals, and began working their way towards the magical 500 mark with two goals against Amazulu in Durban. Through the quick thinking of striker Shaun Bartlett Chiefs were able to bring up their 490th goal PSL goal in style, as he headed Chiefs a late equalizer to earn a valuable point against in a dramatic draw with arch rivals Orlando Pirates on the 9th December.

Six more goals in a game against Maritzburg United on the seventeenth of December pushed Chiefs to the brink of 500 goals, where they now stand thanks to three more strikes against Santos on the 20th December as Chiefs finished off their league fixtures for 2006 with a 3-2 win against Santos.

Of The Amakhosi’s ten goals scored in their last three fixtures which have brought them closer to the 500-goal milestone, the striking duo of Kaizer Motaung Junior and Shaun Bartlett have been responsible for jointly scoring seven of the goals.

With the Chiefs team resuming their preparations for the new- year later this week they will have returned from their holidays rested and ready to reach their five hundredth PSL goal. Should Chiefs display the same kind of free scoring form when they play their first game of the new- year against SuperSport United on the 6th January, it should only be a matter of time. Before the Amakhosi score their 500th PSL goal, in so doing they will join their Soweto neighbours and rivals Orlando Pirates who at the present time are the only team to have scored more than 500 goals in the eleven seasons of the PSL.
