Chiefs move into off-season
Chiefs move into off-season

Posted in News on May 23, 2007.

It felt like the last day of school on Tuesday at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena, as The Amakhosi first team gathered for the final time as they officially closed off the 2006-2007 season.

There was time for his teammates to wish Rowen Fernandez a final goodbye as he begins his move away from the Amakhosi. On Tuesday he had been greeted by the news that instead of packing his bags for the German Bundesliga the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper could well be headed to the English Premier League! Rowen did not know anything about it.

For the rest of the team it was time to head off for a well-earned break which will last for just over a month as the team is set to return for pre season training on the 25th June. As the players left the village kaizerchiefs.com managed to grab hold of some of the guys and found out how they going to spend their off season break.

David Obua

I will be around Johannesburg for the next couple of days before heading back to Uganda, where I will spend a couple of days with my family and then its back to the training ground for me. Early next week the Ugandan national team goes into camp ahead of two very important CAF Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games. I have not been very active with the national team over the past year, and I would like to use the next couple of weeks to get my career with the national team back on track once again.

We have a game against Nigeria at home on the 2nd June we need to win that game as it will really boost our chances of making it to Ghana, although it looks a tough prospect I feel we have what it takes to cause an upset. My preparation for that game has already begun but I will be with the rest of the national team next week. After the Nigeria game we have a match against Lesotho in Maseru on June 16th, in between matches I will be in Kampala and will continue working out on my fitness by working out in the gym. After the Lesotho game my intention is to head back to Johannesburg and take a few days off ahead of the start of pre season training.

Fabian McCarthy

The first part of the off season break will see me host my annual tournament the F.A. McCarthy cup, which has been on the go for the past seven years and it will once again be hosted in the North West Province. We have rotated the tournament in different towns around the Province and this year we will have Secondary School Teams from Mafakeng, Klerksdorp, Vryburg and Kuruman converging on the Alabama Sports Club outside Klerksdorp for the two-day competition.

The Cup is a way for me to help develop and nurture as well as get to bring into the public spotlight the huge reservoir of talent that lies in the North West Province. Once the competition is over I will be spending the rest of the time in Vryburg doing some renovations to my parents home, the task of renovating their home should be a lengthy one and it should take up most of the off season.

Rowen Fernandez departing for a career in German Bundesliga

For the first time in a number of years I have an uncertain future. Once the off season is over and I return for pre – season training, I will obviously be mulling over my future a lot over the next month or so and thinking about the challenges that lie ahead for me. I will stay at home and will spend a lot of the time in the gym trying to keep shape and fitness.

Going to a new team means that I need to get there in good shape ready for the pre – season. In between spending time in the gym and with my girlfriend Sandy I will be out on the golf course with Shaun Bartlett. Over the past year or so I have become good friends with him and he has afforded me a lot of valuable advice as he spent many years playing outside of South Africa.

Hopefully I will be able to keep in touch with the Kaizer Chiefs fans over the next few years through the website, this is not about me moving but I must use this chance to thank the Chiefs fans for all their wonderful words of supporting and encouragement over the years.
