Kaizer Chiefs were briefly knocked off the top of the Castle Premiership table after Mamelodi Sundowns beat Moroka Swallows 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Sundowns’ flight to the top was short lived though as Chiefs beat Santos a few hours later to, once again, go to the top of the table much to the delight of the thousands of Amakhosi supporters who filled the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town.

Despite losing 3-1 Santos coach Roger De Sa complimented the visitors on their determination and hard working ethic which saw them triumph over his team.

Speaking at a press conference after the game De Sa said, “They have the look and swagger of champions, they’re playing with the confidence of a team who wants to win the league.”

The Peoples' Team have played Sundowns and Chiefs this month and when asked which of the two are better championship material the former South Africa international quipped, “You cannot put me on the spot like that, Patrice Motsepe is also a very good friend of mine.

However he did give a constructive view too.

“Based on what I saw this evening I will say that the title can only go in one direction from here. We had a tougher time playing against Chiefs and I think they wanted the three points more than Sundowns when we played them.”

The former Wits coach also commended David Obua and his former ‘student’ Gert Schalkwyk.

“I must congratulate some of the players for their outstanding work rate. David Obua and also one of my old players Gert really shone tonight. Remember Bobby stole him from under my nose a few seasons ago, De Sa joked. Gert has come along way from being a bit-part player and is now a major force in the team and I am really happy to see him being so successful," the former Students coach said.

Da Sa’s team have five league games remaining and are fighting for a place a top eight in order to qualify for next seasons SAA Supa 8 competition. Their next league fixture is away to Bloemfontein Celtic this Sunday.

The Amakhosi too are in action this weekend taking on Moroka Swallows at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening. Tickets are available from any Shoprite-Checkers and Computicket.
