Chiefs in, Pirates out of Charity Cup

Orlando Pirates will not be part of the 20th annual Telkom Charity Cup as they failed to make the cut while nine-time winners Kaizer Chiefs collected enough votes to secure a spot.

The other three teams are Mamelodi Sundowns, Black Leopards and Bloemfontein Celtic.

Amakhosi, fresh from a Vodacom Challenge defeat against rivals Pirates over the weekend, were drawn in the first match against Bloemfontein Celtic at 10:00 with Mamelodi Sundowns playing Black Leopards in the second game at 12:00 but the Charity Cup committee decided to switch the matches around for security reasons. The final kicks off at 16:45.

Celtic polled the most number of votes (164 343) followed by Sundowns on 163 789 with Leopards third on 163 621 and Chiefs fourth with 157 560 votes. It would seem newly crowned Vodacom Champions Pirates could not garner enough votes to stay in.

The clash between Chiefs and Celtic will evoke memories of the last match of the season in Free State where Chiefs needed to win to retain their championship ahead of Pirates. On that occasion, Amakhosi took the honours with a 2-0 win, courtesy of a brace from Portsmouth-bound Collins Mbesuma.

Leopards will also have some score to settle against Sundowns, who beat them 3-0 in the second round league match on April 24.
