Kaizer Chiefs' hopes of retaining their PSL title suffered a serious setback on Thursday night when they could only manage a 2-2 draw against sixth-placed Ajax Cape Town at Soccer City in Johannesburg.

Amakhosi, who desperately needed maximum points to keep up the pressure on league leaders Pirates, went behind in the 19th minute courtesy of a Thembinkosi Fanteni goal.

The hosts responded positively and piled on the pressure, with Collins Mbesuma seeing his shot tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Andre Petim.

Chiefs managed to level matters in the 29th minute through the immaculate Arthur Zwane, slotting the ball past Petim after leaving the Ajax defenders for dead.

Chiefs thought they had taken the lead in the 41st minute after David Radebe beat Petim and unselfishly laid the ball off to Mbesuma, who stabbed it into the empty net. The goal, however, was disallowed when the linesman adjudged him offside.

The two sides went into the interval deadlocked at 1-1.

Ajax started the second half on a more positive note, looking more composed and launching attacks at Chiefs’ goal.

Nhlanhla Shabalala came close to grabbing the lead when he hit a curling shot that ran just wide of the post.

Their attacking approach was rewarded with the lead in the 78th minute, with Dlangudlangu Lunga rifling home from a difficult angle to silence the Amakhosi faithful.

Chiefs buckled down and fought back hard, with man-of-the-match Zwane eventually giving the home supporters something to cheer about with a late tap-in equaliser.

Ajax weren't happy with a point though and nearly snatched all three after hitting the post in the final moments.
