As Kaizer Chiefs get ready to take on Jomo Cosmos in their first home PSL game of the season on Wednesday evening it is important to note, that apart from preparing his team tactically and technically for the visit of Jomo Sono’s charges - the Chiefs coach is has also been hard at working preparing his team mentally and making them strong psychologically for the game, as he is trying to guide his team to look beyond the physical threat posed by Cosmos.

One needs to jog their memory back to September 2005 when Serge Djiehoua was rendered injured for the rest of the season and out of action after he was felled in a tackle by Cosmos defender Andrew Rabutla as Chiefs and Cosmos played to a 1-1 draw. After the Djiehoua incident Cosmos then dethroned Chiefs from their Coca Cola Cup throne when the teams next clashed in a Coca Cola Cup ¼ Final game. The Coca Cola Cup was a tournament which The Amakhosi had virtually made their own since it’s re-inception in 2001, as they won it three times and were runners up on another occasion during the its recently ended five year life span.

Incidentally Chiefs finest hour in the Coca Cola Cup came against Cosmos in the 2001 final as The Amakhosi proved to be just to good for Cosmos humbling them 5-0 in the final. Chiefs and Cosmos have a rivalry that dates back to 1983 when Jomo Sono bought out the Highlands Park Franchise and began his foray into domestic Football in South Africa as a coach. Down the years the Amakhosi have found Cosmos to be a tricky bunch, even though Chiefs do have a major statistical advantage over their Gauteng rivals.

Gerald Sibeko who got onto the score sheet when Chiefs notched up their biggest win in the PSL over Cosmos, which was a 3-0 triumph over Ezenkosi back in The Amakhosi’s championship winning season in 2004 – 2005 believes that Chiefs can repeat that memorable result on Wednesday evening.

The former Kaizer Chiefs youth player said “I think the hardest part of the campaign is behind us, the opening game or two can be very tricky but we came through them undefeated and we can only grow from here”.

Sibeko continued on by saying “Cosmos like to play a tough game and we are prepared for that and in the past when we did not get involved in confrontation and kept to our game plan we defeated them. We just need to be disciplined and maintain calm that would have won us half the battle”.

Chiefs dominance of Cosmos since the PSL has been such that Ezenkosi had to wait five seasons before they were able to gain their first PSL victory over Chiefs and it come in somewhat acrimonious circumstances, during the 2001 – 2002 in a game played at Olimpia Park in Rustenburg.

The Amakhosi were reduced to nine men in the first half as Jabu Pule and Robert Nauseb received their marching orders for what looked like harsh punishments, the nine men Chiefs then sprung as a surprise as they were able to take the lead through Jacob Tshisevhe. In the end Cosmos used their numerical supremacy to take advantage of the situation and ran out 2-1 winners, that game showed the explosive nature of rivalry between the two teams, as Cosmos also had their numbers reduced late on in the match.

Amakhosi veteran midfield Thabo Mooki who missed Chiefs opening match of the season through injury is looking ahead to having a run out against Cosmos on Wednesday evening, aiming to record Chiefs first victory against Ezenkosi with Ernst Middendorp as coach. “I don’t think that we need to look at this game any differently to our previous two games, what has happened in the past is history on Wednesday night we need to rewrite it with a win” added the veteran midfielder.

Kick-Off for Wednesday nights game which is sure to be entertaining and full of goals is at 20h00 at the FNB Stadium, tickets for the game are currently on sale at Computicket as well as Checkers and Shoprite outlets country wide at a cost of R20.
