Chiefs draw Sundowns in Nedbank Cup
Chiefs draw Sundowns in Nedbank Cup

After the first round of Nedbank Cup matches, close to half of the 16 PSL teams have already exited the competition and going into Monday afternoon's draw there was a very strong presence of teams from the lower divisions still in the competition.

The surprises from the first weekend of competition saw the likes of ABSA Premiership teams BidVest Wits, Bloemfontein Celtic and Thanda Royal Zulu, being eliminated by lower league opposition. The chances were that Chiefs could get one of the lower division teams, but as the luck of the draw would have it, The Amakhosi will be involved in the only all-Premier League tie of the round as they will be facing defending PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs though do have home ground advantage for the match, scheduled to be played over the weekend of the 28th March.

Tough draw

After knocking the defending champions Ajax Cape Town out of the tournament on Friday, Chiefs now face the losing finalists from last year, Mamelodi Sundowns, towards the end of the month. The Amakhosi will have home ground advantage against the Brazilians, whom they defeated in this season's Telkom Cup Final in November.

Prior to the Telkom Cup Final, Chiefs and Sundowns last met in a Cup match in the 2005 – 2006 semifinal of the same competition when it was still called the ABSA Cup. Chiefs defeated Sundowns at the Royal Bafokeng stadium via penalties on that occasion to move on to the final where they eventually defeated Orlando Pirates to win the 2005 – 2006 ABSA Cup.

Green With envy

Nedbank, the sponsors of the Nedbank cup, have introduced a new innovation to each game and will, in addition to handing the winner of the man of the match award a cheque of R 5000 which has been the norm at every game, will also get a special commerative Green Blazer to mark his achievement.
